Meet Trailblazer Eliza Nimmich and Eliza Morrison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliza Nimmich and Eliza Morrison.

Can you please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have worked in education, tutoring, and technology for the past 6.5 years. After graduating from college, I moved up to NYC where I started Tutor the People ( together with my (then) boyfriend, now husband. While in New York, I also began to pursue acting for film/tv, taking classes and attending auditions in the City. My husband was in the middle of applying to medical schools at the time. A few years later, he was accepted to Boston University School of Medicine and we found ourselves living in Boston! Immersed in a mecca for education, here, I work on my tutoring company, work on launching our tutoring software, Learnt, and do some acting as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing smooth is worth it (except Nutella)! I joke, but as goes with many things in life when pursuing something challenging, it has been an uphill battle at times. Navigating business, entrepreneurship, acting, simultaneously while my partner navigated medical school, has been quite a balancing act. My advice for other women is to just start doing something. You might not love it at first. You’re not going to love it all the time. Longterm success and accomplishment are built upon many challenges, many feats, and many learning points. If you’re going to do something, give it your all. Seek out people who have done something similar in the past. Connect with people and find out how they have pushed through difficult times. Another thing – make exercise a part of your life. It helps so much with sleep, happiness, energy, the list goes on.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Learnt – what should we know?
I am most proud of my budding company Learnt ( Learnt should be launching SOON! And will be a completely custom-built tutoring marketplace. I encourage all readers to apply to be a tutor (hey if you’re in Boston, you’re probably smart). Learnt will offer tutoring for all ages and specialties by background-checked, verified tutors.

What sets you apart from others?
My loyalty and approachability set me apart from others. Strangers will come up to me start sharing their secrets–which is definitely oversharing at times, but in the end, I think it’s good that people feel comfortable around me. In order to work well with others, I do all I can to establish trust on both ends. All relationships are built on trust. Business is no exception.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Well… sometimes, people might automatically assume that you are a subordinate of sorts. I’ve had people get short with me in conversation and request to speak with my superior. I kind of like wearing many hats, though. You have to be versatile as a woman. As a female in leadership, you are carving a path less traveled. There may be pebbles or detours that don’t always appear for more preset routes. That’s a part of the process. Embrace it and learn from it.
