Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomesha Campbell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2009, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Crime and Justice. Instead of continuing to graduate school as I had originally planned I decided to follow in the steps of my parents and brother by pursuing a career in the Marine Corps. As a cross country and track runner in college I naturally excelled in cardiovascular strength, but muscular strength was an area of fitness I didn’t focus on until I joined the Marine Corps.
During my time in the Marine Corps the desire to seen as an equal in a male dominated occupational specialties, led to a renewed focus on building muscular strength. That desire for muscular strength lead to a need for more knowledge about the impact that my not so healthy food choices were having on my ability to stay without height and weight standards. After discovering that small tweaks to my diet were leading to a healthy weight that left me feeling full and satiated I decided to obtain my nutrition certification.
In 2016, I became a Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach from the National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association. While obtaining my certification I launched my blog, A Fitness Mindset, as a way to share the best practices that I was learning about nutrition and exercise. In addition, I noticed that live video was vastly growing as a medium to expand my reach and decided to shift my focus from blogging to broadcasting live on Periscope and Facebook Live.
Through sharing workouts, recipes, and fitness tips I started growing a social media following of working professionals, entrepreneurs, and side hustlers who wanted to stay healthy without having to invest in a gym membership.
After moving to Boston in early August to pursue a Master’s Degree at The Heller School at Brandeis University, I decided to turn my hobby into a full-time business. While I continue to share fitness recommendations on live video, I know offer virtual nutrition consultation services for those who want a more customized approach to health and fitness.
Has it been a smooth road?
Challenges and obstacles make life interesting. In the beginning, finding a way to rise above the noise in the crowded space of the health and fitness industry was a serious challenge. While there are many fitness consultants, coaches, or experts someone can choose from the one thing I constantly remind myself is that they aren’t me. There is someone out there that won’t act unless they hear it from me.
Once I clarified who I really wanted to help and how I wanted to help them, it became so much easier to engage with people online and offline. Even when things feel like they might all be going completely wrong, I just remember the one person that needs to hear my message. That keeps me going despite the struggles that occur along the journey.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Fitness Mindset story. Tell us more about the business.
A Fitness Mindset provides customized nutrition consulting services so that you create the right fitness plan for you that gets you the results you desire. After filling out an intake firm and scheduling a 30-minute consultation, we’ll hop on the phone to discuss your diet, exercise routine, and fitness goal. Following the call, a customized fitness plan will be sent to you via email with recommendations for your next steps. During the subsequent follow-up calls, we’ll track your progress toward your goals and overcome any roadblocks that try to sideline you from achieving your goals.
The reason that I’ve chosen this approach is my own personal experience following templates without customizing them to fit my lifestyle. I’ve seen so many fitness professionals encourage people to follow diet rules or stick to a workout plan as outlined. In my experience, this disempowers people and prevents them from making the best decision for their body. After, falling for that mistake time and time again, I’ve decided to make it my mission to help others avoid the pitfalls by empowering them to act in their best interests.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see some major shifts in the fitness industry in terms of nutrition. With more studies being conducted on plant-based diets, Amazon buying Whole Foods and new diets appearing overnight the landscape of fitness are vastly changing. Before, nutrition was a word that few understood, but now it’s growing into something that more are seeking education for. From removing processed foods from your diet to transitioning to a plant-based diet there are some major shifts happening throughout society.
In addition, the fitness industry, in general, is vastly change. From a space that was previously dominated by celebrity fitness trainers to being able to grow your reach by sharing your weight loss story on social media, the creation of live video has been a game changer. With the click of a ‘go live’ button, a Mompreneur in the U.S. could be leading a virtual class for an audience in India. Or, a bodybuilder in South Africa can be live streaming their workout to an audience in Suriname. With live video, the possibilities are now endless and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
