Today we’d like to introduce you to Tali Katav.
Tali, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For the last 15 years, I have been working as a Personal Shopper. It all started when I held a management position at a hi-tech company, where I learned the importance of the right outfit at the right time making the right impression.
One day My CEO approached me and asked me to help him dress up, and it ended up as a fun experience and then a website and then a business. Seven years ago I relocated to Boston area with my family and left a very successful business behind – thousands of followers and visitors (My Israeli site – www.talibk.co.il) and even a prime-time talk show…
I followed my husband dreams and had to rebuild mine. Starting a business from scratch was not easy – I had to tune the services and the way I approached the market. I started to publish daily updates on my Instagram page – https://www.instagram.com/tali_bk_personal_shopper/.
I even offer a “remote” service using an app to help clients all over the US to renew their wardrobe and go shopping – without meeting the clients face to face.
I have been working with both the business sector and the private sector from all ages and phases in life – from a 13-year-old girl struggling to fit in, to a man in his 50’s who found himself dating again and had no clue how to dress.
From an undergrad student in jeans and Crocs (those shoes should be outlawed!!) to a Hi-tech CEO who was taking his company public. For every one of them, I built a personalized experience with innovative styling.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After dealing with the language barriers, I believe one of the most challenging aspects of moving business like mine to the US – was the size and the variety of the shopping areas.
I had to learn how to navigate through the Shopping stores and make it as efficient as possible mainly in NYC but also around Boston. I have learned that although there are some cultural differences between USA and Israel, people appreciate excellent service and direct approach.

I offer two primary services:
Shopping workshop – It starts with an interview to set expectations right. I get to know the client’s personality, lifestyle, the things he/she loves and making sure they feel comfortable with the process.
Then I plan the trip, and as we go along, I teach my clients some practical skills about how to flatter their body type in order to enhance the appearance.
Wardrobe workshop – This workshop takes place at the clients home. Together, we analyze what pieces work for their body and create new outfit combinations with what they already have. We talk about types of fabric, colors and what best suits the image they want to project. This workshop ends – usually – with lots of donation bags.
On top of that, I do lots of short styling workshops for a group of people – I talk about common mistakes, trends, and fashion. Recently, I started to offer a monthly remote service – based on a personal and secured chat app – (Slack) – I communicate with my clients on a daily basis and help them to assess the wardrobe, where to shop and what to wear. It is cool and all done remotely.
Many personal shoppers have a great fashion and trends knowledge, but the most important thing about this job is to understand the client’s needs – to match the style to their personality and their needs.
One thing that I do differently is that I take no commision from the stores I visit with my clients. When brands approach me and asking to thank me for a visit – I hand over the discounts/promotions/giveaways to my clients.
What were you like growing up?
I was always fascinated by people; I love to listen and learn about their challenges. When I served the military, I was helping soldiers with social problems to adjust into the system. I am a good listener and I am passionate about fashion and style
