Meet Suzie Jiang of Spirit Spritz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzie Jiang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I knew I would start my own company at some point but didn’t have a concrete idea. I have always been passionate about the creative space, especially fashion, art, events, and media, and I knew I needed to be equipped with essential business skills, so I went to Boston University’s Questrom School of Business while interning at different companies in different industries. In the meantime, I tried to inform myself as much information as I could and reached out to successful people for meetings.

During this process, I was really disappointed that there wasn’t a place for me to find helpful resources for starting a creative company. Many major websites such as Forbes have so many irrelevant articles that I have to filter through, and most of them are tailored towards those who want to become the next Ubers and Airbnbs. On the other hand, directly talking to entrepreneurs and asking them questions that are not answered in press gave me so much insight and inspired me to start Spirit Spritz. I want to create THE platform for aspiring entrepreneurs in the creative industry who really just want to start a small business that they are passionate about and at the same time bring these amazing entrepreneurs under the spotlight that they deserve.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had to learn everything by myself! For example, I never used Photoshop and Illustrator before, but I need to create a lot of graphic design. Some of my friends helped me, but I knew I couldn’t rely on them every single time I need something done. I also didn’t have the money to hire someone, so I watched crash courses online and taught myself how to do them. Pretty much everything is a challenge: prospecting and getting interview candidates, expanding the email list, increasing social media followings, etc. There are also people who don’t understand or believe in what I am doing. However, I have received incredible support from friends, entrepreneurs whom I interviewed, and even strangers. Their encouragement and excitement about Spirit Spritz really kept me going.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I launched Spirit Spritz on January 29, 2018, so it is still very young! Right now, Spirit Spritz features interviews with global entrepreneurs in the creative industry on how they build their business. The industries covered include beauty and wellness, fashion and retail, food and beverages, hospitality and events, media and production, and art and culture. Unlike other websites that have interviews, all the profiles are on all page in alphabetical order, so you can access the interviews at any time. It’s not about what’s new and what’s media-worthy. It’s about timeless information that people who discover Spirit Spritz 10 years later can still benefit from. Each interview truly focuses on the business aspects and the first few steps of starting the business. I actually have the conversation with the entrepreneurs and never just send them questions via emails. I then transcribe them and edit the answers into questions and answer format, keeping only the useful information. It breaks down into key business topics such as finance and marketing for readers to easily and quickly find what they want to know. I also ask all of them the same five questions, and the readers can browse all the answers in “The 5 Questions” Page.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been really independent. I am originally from Beijing and came to the United States for boarding school with two suitcases by myself when I was 14. My parents make me figure out everything by myself ever since then. I completely decide on my own about what I wanted to do during the summer or where I wanted to live. I also have to build a network in a country where I knew no one. I am fortunate that my parents provided me financial support that allowed me to travel around the globe and participate in different activities. During my free time, I’m either working out, going to different music, fashion, and art events, or traveling.
