Meet Susan Finn in Westport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Finn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting journey that brought me to where I am today, coaching independent business owners exactly on what to do to get new clients consistently by making the best strategic use of their digital platforms.

In late 2002, with my youngest child off to kindergarten, I decided to start my own business. Since my background up to that point had been in the food science industry, as a quality control manager and a nutritional assessment consultant, this idea of being an independent business owner was new for me. As I began to gain more customers in my artisan tote bag business, I craved the camaraderie of other professionals while I also realized my lack of knowledge in many areas of business life. I’d invited a few women over to talk about the ins and outs of business ownership. After a few months, there were so many women interested in these monthly meetings that we moved over to a local bank’s meeting room and there the official Women’s Business Network of SE MA (WBN) was established.

The WBN became a powerful growth tool for our members. Within the community, we could find most of the resources we’d need to continue the growth and success of our own businesses – accountants, lawyers, graphic artists, website designers, copywriters, house-cleaners, and party planners.

As the director of the WBN, my passion for being a “CONNECTOR” became firmly rooted.

It didn’t take me long to see that many of the WBN members were struggling to grow their business because they simply did not know how to be strategic with the digital marketing growth tools available to them.

Websites, social media platforms, email marketing, online groups.

I made a commitment to immerse myself in absolutely everything that had to do with digital marketing. I read every book on marketing and networking I could get my hands on. I took every course that was available. I went to every seminar and conference. I became certified by a number of online service providers. I essentially decided to become the CONNECTOR of all-things-digital in order to be able to help the members grow their businesses.

My 12 years as the director of the WBN gave me immense satisfaction to guide business owners into taking control of and making the most of their own digital platforms in order to attract more clients.

Since then, I’ve worked with dozens of clients, ran numerous group programs and spoken in front of many organizations. I’ve created “Rise Above the Noise”, a 5-module system to guide every business owner with what it takes to spotlight their authenticity and their professional expertise in order to stand out in a busy digital world.

I have made a commitment to dedicate my professional life to helping other self-employed, sole practitioners, and small business owners, get more clients by providing them with digital marketing education, coaching and support services.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s funny. I really had no concrete expectations. My focus was always on how I could use my interest in digital marketing to learn more so that I could help more people. The more information I learned, the more skills I honed, the more successes my clients experienced all fed my desire to keep learning more – keep sharing more.

In digital marketing, it is a real challenge to keep up with day-to-day changes (sometimes, they’re minute-to-minute). On the other hand, though, the online communities and learning platforms are super helpful. The “Hive Mind’ helps all of us in the industry keep each other on top of the newest and latest.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What my current and former clients have found exceedingly helpful is that I bring an extremely fresh perspective to help them “Rise Above the Noise” and give them resources they’d never considered using on their platforms. Because of this, they are able to stand out in an overcrowded marketplace and are the ones who start getting the clients.

I have a flexible system that can be adapted for any field. It’s not what your business does but how to successfully promote your business and yourself to your target market. It is key to embrace your personal brand and messaging and to create content that clearly communicates that message, using the “Rise Above the Noise” step-by-step procedures.

People in a particular field are probably ALL doing similar things on their digital platforms. This creates a lot of repetition.

My “Rise Above The Noise” system offers my clients an easy-to-follow step-by-step process towards building an authentic and sustainable digital marketing program that helps them stand out in a noisy digital world. I am dedicated to patiently teaching business owners about sharing their authentic self to their target market. I will break things down into simple and realistic steps and time increments to avoid overwhelm and to help them feel in control of their authentic online presence while holding them accountable to the tasks they commit to in order to keep their business moving forward.

That said, there are business owners who are busy focusing on using their strengths to offer the best services possible to their clients. This focus can leave them without the time to maintain their branded, authentic online presence, so they recognize the value of having someone they trust to get it done for them.

I’ve simply become passionate about empowering entrepreneurs. That’s why my clients, groups, and customers get great results (and I throw in a healthy dose of compassion, humor, accountability, and encouragement, which ALWAYS helps!)

What were you like growing up?
If I told you today that I was painfully shy while growing up, I doubt you would believe me. But, it’s true. I was the quiet girl with the frizzy hair, braces, and thick eyeglasses studying at the library for the next exam. I’ve always been hungry for information.

I studied food science in college which led me to my early career as a quality control manager for HP Hood. (It’s true, you really can “feel good about Hood”). I simply loved creating step-by-step procedures for the various products, machines, and lab testing.

I continue to feed that hunger for knowledge and love of creating systems to help create simplicity, order, and bring positive results.
