Meet Stewart Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stewart Wilson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have been on a nearly 40-year quest. In the Fall of 1979, I had an urge to create human figure sculptures by using wire to wrap scraps of fabric, plastic and other materials. I have been wrapping ever since and have created over 31,000 figures in human and animal form. I call them “Personas” – wrapped representatives from another dimension – which have been exhibited and sold worldwide.

In addition to artist, entrepreneur, and educator, I have been Executive Director of two non-profit arts organization which I have founded – Public Image (New York, New York 1981-84) and Artwell Gallery (Northwest CT 1995-2011).

My ongoing quest has propelled me into the 21st century. My crew and I are about to launch Personaland (, an online creative global village for the arts and culture. The Personas have come alive digitally and are eager to positively interact with artists and art appreciators. We have been building community through our social media presence and posts:

Please tell us about your art.
I make the Personas, but I am also a maker of community. I see the Personas as a representative of our ability and desire to reach out and strive to achieve a greater potential for ourselves through connectivity. Using creativity as a common bond is an artistic way beyond the scope of mere object making.

When I started making the Personas, I knew I was diverting from my upbringing and intellectual, willful approach to life. The making of the Personas was a meditative, intuitive activity. I did not know what I was doing or why only it felt like the right thing to do and I needed to have faith. In a way, I realized early on that I might be making the Personas as much as they were remaking me. Artist as a medium. The process has encouraged me to be more loving, present and grateful. Personaland seems a correct development as I have moved form sole artist to part of a crew of talented people with a common purpose. That the digital, virtual world offered by new technology has such potential to as the newest artist medium. A world which perfectly aligns with the spiritual nature of the Personas.

We are making Personaland a welcoming environment for people to feel inspired and respected.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think more than ever, artists should understand their role in their community. Humans are communicators; artists are communicators. How and what we share with each other makes our lives more meaningful.

We are living in a very negative, distracting and isolating age. Personaland is about providing a sanctuary for people to feel enlivened, respected and connected. We hope our community will use us as a platform, a forum, a second home.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can follow Personaland on social media – Instagram, Facebook, YouTube or send us your email to receive our Mailchimp updates. The website, in “under construction” version will be launch starting October 1st with a more functional version coming in November. More activities will be unveiled periodically.

At our website, we are inviting people to join our community to not only support us but more importantly, provide exciting opportunities and perks to you and your friends.
