Meet Stephen S. Akian of Akian Plumbing in Watertown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen S. Akian.

Stephen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started with me at 19 years old realizing I had to get a career going. I posted an ad on Craigslist stating that I was a young, motivated and quick learning individual looking to get into the plumbing trade. A Master Plumber that had recently moved here from the U.K. and started his business gave me a ring and that’s how my apprenticeship began. After the first day on the job I was hooked. I loved everything (well almost everything, the job tends to get dirty from time to time) about it. It’s never repetitive and there are a lot of people that appreciate what you do which makes you feel like you’re contributing to society.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
People have described me as an intense person. So there were struggles but they were self-inflicted. I wanted to be the best so I was always attending classes above the standard requirements for licensure so there were a lot of long days. I was constantly challenging myself as well asking to be on sophisticated jobs so I could learn.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Akian Plumbing – what should we know?
We’re a plumbing service and repair company. We tend to stay away from the larger construction projects to be able to serve those in time of need. There aren’t many plumbers these days and I hear almost every day about one’s challenges to get a plumber to just show up and get the job done. We’re known for our customer service, attention to detail and our ability to think and solve problems effectively in critical situations. We’ve had a few customers shed tears because we really want you to have an “experience” with us. Many people tell me that they’re no longer afraid of plumbers after dealing with us!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There have been friends and family that really helped me keep my head up. If I said I did this all on my own I’d be lying.
