Meet Stephanie Voltaire of V-Lure Designs by Voltaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Voltaire.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a young girl, I grew up to a mother who knew how to sew and worked as a seamstress at times. Every time she sewed I watched and assisted her in her work. Over time I learned how to sew from helping and watching my mom. Fast forward to approximately 18 years later, while in graduate school my roommate had a sewing machine and out of boredom I decided to bring back my skills and decided to make a clutch.

I made two clutches which I was very proud of and excited about, out of excitement I sent photos of the bags to my friends and family. I received great comments and feedback such as “Girl! Where did you get this from?” “Get me one.” “This bag is hot” and so on. After a few weeks of being happy with my clutches that I made, I decided to take a leap of faith and turned my hobby into a business and that is how V-Lure Designs was birthed. V-Lure Designed by Voltaire is a Boston based line of fashionable handbags.

Throughout life experiences, I realize that a few words of encouragement can help uplift a woman’s day. Our goal is to encourage and empower women ONE bag at a time! Our bags are “Bags with Purpose”, since summer 2017 V-Lure Designs by Voltaire now includes a label with an inspirational scripture for encouragement.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. When you start a new business especially in this industry of small businesses and entrepreneurship you are up for a challenge! When you are introducing something new that people are not used to it’s hard. Most rather support “big” designers as opposed to their local small businesses. Everyone’s taste is different. For example with my bags I may create a bag that a few friends and I think is going to be a top seller but when I post it on social media and the website I don’t get the response that I am looking for.

There have been times where I didn’t receive any sales for a few months, and I would panic and want to quit. Every time I start to get this feeling of “quitting”, I get an order, or a request for a custom order and that changes my entire mind. So at the end of the day I am grateful to my customers for their support. These orders and request in times of despair is confirmation that I need to keep going.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about V-Lure Designs by Voltaire – what should we know?
V-Lure Designs by Voltaire is a line of handmade bags for women with the goal to encourage women ONE bag at a time! We specialize in fashionable, one of a kind clutches. For now, I (Stephanie Voltaire) design and hand make all of our bags. What sets us apart from others is that you won’t find our bags anywhere else but at V-Lure Designs by Voltaire. Because they are designed and handmade by me, no one else has them.

With the note of encouragement inside each bag; every time a customer opens their V-Lure Design bag we hope they are encouraged. This sets us apart because no one else does this. Aside from the encouragement, our bags are not mass-produced which means we only make a small number of each bag. In a society where everyone is striving for uniqueness, V-Lure Designs by Voltaire provides that with our bags.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother Marie Jeanine Compere Voltaire deserves all the credit. She taught me the sewing skills that I have to make the V-Lure Designs bags. In the beginning of V-Lure Designs, she was my right-hand woman, she provided a lot of assistance in sewing and designing the bags. She still continues to help as needed and upon my request.

Her dedication to her family, her worth ethic, and belief in God has inspired me and showed me that I can do anything that I put my mind to. I grew up to a mom where a “no” was a motivation to do better to get a “yes” and that is how I live my life. After God, everything that I am today and know today I owe to my mother.
