Today we’d like to introduce you to Scotty and Kae McCraney .
Scotty and Kae, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Kae and myself have worked for many years in hospitality and retail management, and have always wanted to have our own business and help people. Kae being an immigrant, and being a gay couple, we knew we wanted to spread love and create a space and products to help people on their journeys. Knowing struggle, how would we guide peoples healing and lend to their journeys in a positive way? Fast forward to us both working at lululemon, setting our goals, and realizing that we wanted to create products that were holistic and natural, and also create a brand that would tie all of this together and eventually create a yoga & reiki studio where we could manifest all of the things we could imagine. Two years ago we went to our first Wanderlust in Stratton VT, and were truly inspired sharing our handmade bracelets and malas, which turned into orders and Seeking OM was born. We then created natural soy wax candles and aromatherapy products which are all natural and created based on intention, chakras, crystal infused and reiki charged. After about a year of doing pop ups, festivals and farmers markets, we started the next chapter of finding a yoga studio by the beach where we could both teach yoga, reiki and share our products and passion with customers. In December we opened Seeking OM Studio and began the next step of our passion filled journey. A beautiful community has emerged, and as we say, we create the space and they all do the work! A space filled with love, inquiry and a quest for healing and living a better, healthier life! We lived our first goal of Wanderlust 108 in our hometown of Boston last year and have set a goal to complete more this year. We launched last season at SOWA Boston where you can find us all season, as well as many in store pop ups. We have already completed one Wanderlust festival in West Virginia and more coming up, along with Nantucket Yoga festival as well! Last year we got to share our brand with New York City at the Well Summit which we were very excited about! Giving back is at the core of who we are, first and foremost our mission is to give back. We have partnered with some amazing organizations that we feel incredibly passionate about. Yoga Reaches Out is where we launched at our first large scale festival and it’s a truly special organization, we also partner with Vetoga which provides yoga and other healing modalities to veterans and their families. We are always creating and working and have been blessed with massive amounts of love and support from friends and family, from the yoga community and our mentors. Having the most supportive and loving parents is a catalyst to help us do what we do. We are so excited to share our journey and hear of so many others, and to be a part of it is truly humbling. Cementing our mission of “Find your journey, find yourself”.
Has it been a smooth road?
Obstacles make for strength and learning. We embrace and celebrate challenges as much as our successes. There are so many learnings along the way about running a business in general, and specifically introducing products like ours to the masses. There is a lot of work and attention to detail of our products. It has been a labor of love sourcing raw materials, creating and making them all. Some learnings are that a lot of what we do (festivals) we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and events having a turnout. You can never go and expect an event to be the same twice. Each time is unique so being complacent or having certain expectations is not the way to go, but being agile and willing to roll with the punches so to speak is paramount. We then had to figure out how to go from a vending business with products, to having a brick and mortar yoga studio would create a whole new set of oppotunities. Every day is a new day, and we find that it is critical to always be innovating and learning to grow, flourish and tackle obstacles.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Seeking OM story. Tell us more about the business.
We handmade holistic and natural products ourselves, that are all crystal infused and reiki charged. Our hands and energy touch almost every product. We scrutinize over quality and how we source and create the most natural items we can. Something I feel like sets up apart is that we are a brand, we are a yoga studio also creates their own products that relate to our services. We wear many hats from operation to production, to teaching to creating, oh and hauling all of our products around to vend and share all over! We are most proud of creating our own products and remaining true to ourselves with everything we do. We always ask, is this who we are before we go into anything.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Every day I feel like there is more and more in the news about yoga, holistic products and on the flip side what toxins are doing to us. For the most part people have the desire to live a healthier life, but maybe not everyone has the tools and accessibility to make it happen. I truly see healing modalities becoming more and more mainstream and western and eastern medicine becoming more and more collaborative. My hope is that we as a society move more and more towards wellness and alternative products and modalities become more mainstream and we can stop needing to call them “alternative”. Everyone deserves to have access to a healthier lifestyle, and we strive to be accessible.
