Meet Samantha Elfland of Metropolitan Cabinets & Countertops in Norwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Elfland.

Samantha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Metropolitan was started in 1984 by Stuart & Mike Elfland, Samantha’s father, and grandfather respectively, and Stuart still runs the business today. What started off as 1 location with 3 employees has grown to 4 locations, a manufacturing facility, and over 180 people.

Metropolitan manufactures it’s own cabinets and fabricates its own stone countertops at its 145,000 sqft facility in Norwood. All the cabinetry is made from American plywood, sourced from Oregon. Metropolitan does not sub any of the stonework and fabricates everything at their shop with the latest computer-driven machinery.

Metropolitan’s team of designers create kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, fireplaces and more, that feature functionality combined with beauty. Each project is custom tailored for the customer, who is our top priority, and that’s why we’ve been in business for over 33 years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Slowed housing markets over the years have always presented challenges. The financial crisis in 2008 was a very scary time for our business since remodeling was not a priority for homeowners. We weathered those tough few years and bounced back, due to a lot of our loyal client base and reputation.

Metropolitan Cabinets & Countertops – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Metropolitan Cabinets & Countertops is the largest cabinet manufacturer in the region. As a wholesale manufacturing and distribution company that specializes in working with trade professionals, Metropolitan saves customers time and money at every stage of the project.

Our design specialists measure each job, design to each customer’s specifications and see every project through to completion.

We specialize in quality and convenience. Our cabinets are hand-crafted by highly skilled workers, and our stone countertops are fabricated with extreme detail and care, which has given our work the distinction of being the highest quality. We are the only kitchen company in New England that offers cabinetry and also fabricates their own stone – making us a convenient one-stop shop.

We also are committed to our local charities, donating cabinetry for numerous Greater Boston Habitat for Humanity homes and to the North Bennet Street School in Boston. We contributed to over 15 other charities financially in 2016 alone. What we are most proud of is the quality of our work and we couldn’t do that without our incredible team. Many of our employees have been with us for over 15 years, numerous over 20. We are truly one big family at our family-run business.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Joining the company almost two years ago was a very proud moment. It was always a goal of mine to work for the family business one day, so it was extremely exciting when I finally did in January 2016.
