Meet Robin Boyce of Design Center West and Bedworx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Boyce.

Robin – please share your story with us.
For almost four decades, Design Center West has been providing expert interior design services; specializing in furniture, flooring window treatments, and accessories. This Spring after 40 years of business, DCW has tripled its retail space, and is now located at the Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough Mass. Our 6100-sq. ft. retail space is located on the Main floor, across from JC Penneys. Known as an interior design and home decor destination center that is open to the trade, as well as the retail public… “Shop Where the Decorators Shop”.

Design Center West first opened its doors in Shoppers World Mall in 1977, as the popular destination and most successful bath shop, (Bath and Boudoir) in New England.

By 1981 Bedworx was founded, and opened in the adjoining space. By 1986 Bedworx took over the Lazy Boy Furniture location on the upper level of the mall, and the bath shop remained in its original location until 1989; they merged on the upper level. In 1993 Robin and her staff moved out of the soon to be rebuilt mall, onto Rt. 9, into a 7000 sq. ft. space, and became a Robert Allen Rep. Gallery, Open to decorators, and designers and joined the “World Wide Web”, and opened her first E-commerce Web Sites. www.directfurniturecenter.com www.leatherfurniturestore.com. Two years ago, joined Amazon, and eBay, which I insist is why we weathered all of the recessions and changes in the business climate since the 70’s. For those of the manufacturers that refused to believe in the internet, most of them are gone, or going.

One of the best things we’ve done is introduce the new concept of partnering with multiple vendors, and representing their quality lines to the home furnishing/design trade; Jaymar, Canadel, Taylor King, Stone Concepts, Kravet Fabrics, Karndean, Shaw flooring, Hunter Douglas, Renewal by Anderson, Wolf Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinets; and so many more; enables the consumer to “see it, touch it and feel it”.

I always felt that my concept was common sense. Whether someone is looking for leather or fabric furniture, indoor and outdoor. Bedroom or Dining room furniture, blinds, shades, drapes, valances, area rugs, hardwood flooring, tile or granite, along with a major assortment of Quartz counter tops. Or would like to hire one of the designers on staff for consultation…. With over 100 manufacturers to pick from why would you shop anywhere else.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Mostly a smooth road… One of the obstacles early on, while my sister and I were starting our business, and raising a family…. was just being a woman in business on their own back then. “I’m definitely not complaining; I’ve enjoyed every bit of my adventure”.

Loans at that time were not made to women, unless they were a teacher or a nurse. In fact, in 1977; it was unheard of that a woman could get financing on her own without her parents or her husband cosigning for them.

But we prevailed, grew, and had employees and staff that some of them stayed for over 30 years. At one time, we employed over 22 decorators, designers, and fashion coordinators.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Design Center West and Bedworx – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Design Center West is a culmination of multiple stores with the philosophy of a “one stop shop”. A Candy Store for home shoppers and designers alike; “All under one roof”.

I consider myself, The Chief Cook and Bottle Washer” of the company. My forte is interior design, my passion is renovations and redesigning a space for a customer; so the decorating while redesigning putting it all together; saves a customer thousands on a project. We design and supply the tile for backsplashes after we finish their project; and provide and recommend the best installers.

We are proud and honored to continue to work with other family companies. In particular, 20th Century Home builders in Hopkinton: One of the premiere top residential builders/developers in New England. The Nation Family, now three generations strong are known for their subdivisions, and quality homes. I love working for them and their clients. They live in the neighborhoods that they build, and allow myself along with their clients to select and design their interiors.

What sets us apart is our commitment to continue to carry quality manufacturers in a time when a lot of people are buying disposable furniture. “Inexpensive junk” as we call it. NO BONDED LEATHER, in our company. I believe this is why our customers continue to come back to shop with us, and refer us to their friends and families.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Continuing our legacy, building new relationships, inviting new customers into our new home.

Rumor has it that there will be more Design Center Wests popping up in other Simon Malls someday.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
