Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard and Richard Sullivan II.
Richard and Richard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in 1975, as a bartender at the place now known as R.F. O’Sullivan & Son. Back in the day food was not a popular item at all. It was mostly all drinks but as time went on food became very popular in the bar business. I purchased O’Sullivan’s in 1991 and decided to make burgers my main dish. I started to walk across the street to Star Market and purchase 5lbs of hamburger, 10lbs of hamburger, 0lbs of hamburger. Now it was time to find a butcher.
As time went on we were finally recognized by major newspapers for selling prime beef burgers. Once that happened, we knew we had to make burgers with all different toppings on them (We now feature 35 different burgers). As years went by we found ourselves on the #1 food show in New England “The Phantom Gourmet”. Once my son Richard II and daughter Sinead got older, we decided to expand. I then purchased our second location in Lynn, MA. Which is located right next to Lynn auditorium that features old and new musicians. We then realized that the location would be a great success when 2,250 people walked into my building to see the shows. After 26 years of business, I strive to keep my old customers coming back as well as the new!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After being in this industry all my life, anyone that says the restaurant business is a smooth road is full of Sh*t. I have been a cook, dishwasher, bartender, plumber, electrician etc. to make this business of mine survive. When you feel your phone ring, you know that you’re going to have to cook, bartend, or serve for the day. As of today, it is much easier to keep staff longer because I am established. But at the end of the day I still love what I do!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about R.F. O’Sullivan & Son – what should we know?
We are known for the 20-minute thick and juicy unsquished burger. I take pride in training my kitchen staff to form my famous 1/2 pound burger. You can order your burger from rare to well done depending on your preference. I don’t want to be known to create fancy milkshakes, I want to be known as one of the best burgers you’ve ever eaten.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would just use one word for this question and that’s CONSISTECY which I am know for.
