Today we’d like to introduce you to Huong Nguyen Wolf.
Huong, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Quilling Card LLC. I grew up in Vietnam and had previously worked in Marketing throughout Southeast Asia and the US for large corporations such as Unilever and L’Oreal. After years of working towards someone else’s dream, I decided to leave the industry and pursue my entrepreneurial spirit and passion for the art of quilling. In 2011 my husband Raphael and I decided to take this passion and turn it into a greeting card company with the goal of making this beautiful art form more accessible and placing it in the homes of admirers all over the globe. Day-to-day, I am constantly working to improve the line, I am responsible for managing domestic and international business operations, and am the point of contact with our team in Vietnam. Quilling Card is a Certified Member of the Fair Trade Federation and I make several trips a year to Vietnam to work directly with our team of artisans ensuring the workshops are running efficiently and are full of happy workers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Quilling is a lost art form. When we first started Quilling Card, one of our challenges was the lack of consumer knowledge of this art. Many confused quilling for quilting. A large part of our brand is centered around the education of quilling and emphasizing the handcrafted aspect of our designs. People have been surprised to find out that these intricate designs are made completely out of paper. Another struggle we faced at the beginning of our journey was building a team of passionate artisans. Our quillers were skeptical at first thinking this was just a hobby and not a sustainable career so it was challenging to convince them otherwise, however today all of our employees are paid 20%-25% above the national average and are often the primary earners for their families. Many of our quillers have advanced to lead quillers, designers, and management positions further showing this is a rewarding career with growth potential. Lastly, we began this journey with very little knowledge of the greeting card industry which presented challenges for obvious reasons, but our passion for this art led us to persevere through all obstacles that have presented themselves.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Quilling Card – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Quilling is the art of rolling, coiling and shaping small strips of paper to create a cohesive three dimensional design. The history of quilling can be dated back to Egyptian times where crafters would use a bird’s feather (quill) as the tool to coil the paper upon. We are proud that Quilling Card has become the premiere source of preserving and sharing this beautiful art form as it is our mission to keep it alive and flourishing. Quilling Card is truly a one-of-a-kind company, we are the only business commercially producing products using the art of quilling on a mass scale. Although we started as primarily a greeting card company, our passion for this art has led us to explore quilling all kinds of gifts – most recently we have launched a journal collection, musical keepsake boxes, and earrings. We are also just releasing DIY quilling kits so that men and women can take up quilling as a new favorite hobby. We place great importance on practicing responsible business practices which is why Quilling Card is certified member of the Fair Trade Federation. We have a team of over 300 artists among our three workshops in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where we focus on maintaining the highest quality work environments. Being a member of the Fair Trade Federation reassures our consumers that they are buying a handmade product free from any negative stigmas. Quilling Card’s main office is in Framingham, Massachusetts where new design and product ideas are developed, all business matters are conducted, and where we warehouse and ship all products from.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am looking forward to seeing what new ideas and products we can create using the art of quilling. There are endless possibilities and I want to keep thinking out-of-the-box to come up with new products that excite our customers and further promote the lost art of quilling.
