Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Planeta.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Connecticut, where my family and I raised and fostered animals my entire adolescence, and that greatly influenced me when determining my future career plans. I also always had a great interest and affinity for the arts, and attended the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in CT. Thus, I applied for both pre-veterinary medicine and architecture/interior design programs at Wentworth. Ultimately, my queasiness for animal illness and surgeries made becoming a vet a less viable career option, so I followed my other passion of design, where I graduated magna cum laude from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
During my time at Wentworth, I began interning for firms in 1998, one of which was CBT Architects. I was fortunate to have an incredible mentor while at CBT who recognized my talent early on and fostered my design abilities and creative eye. After my internship concluded, I joined the firm full-time. When my mentor passed at a young age, it was very difficult for me; however, it helped propel and motivate me to be all that I could in the world of design. Her confidence and support in my abilities, coupled with the connections I had made in Boston, led me to the decision to open my own firm in 2006.
While still with CBT and now working on my own clients, it was non-stop, around-the-clock. I would be at my corporate job all day, then work in my home office until the wee hours of the morning, sleep for a few hours, and repeat. To some, this may seem awful, but to me, it was invigorating! Every client, every trip, every new product just made me crave more. Eventually in 2011, with the help of trusted colleagues and support from my family, I made the decision to focus on my business full-time. It was a leap of faith, and one of which I am so very proud.
Today, Planeta Design Group is a renowned boutique multi-disciplinary interior design firm working on some of Boston’s most prestigious residential and corporate projects.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Looking back on the past 10 years of Planeta Design Group, the road has not always been smooth, but I am a firm believer that nothing in life is worth doing if it doesn’t come to those who are ready to embrace change with open arms. Bumps in the road are what allow you to learn, you move on and you grow. I am very fortunate to have amazing role models and fellow entrepreneurs in my life that have helped me along the way. There are also incredible clients and industry leaders with whom I have built trust and loyalty, and that certainly helps when times get tough.
One challenge our firm has dealt with has been the internet – with its ability for people to get quick, inexpensive design at their fingertips – it was certainly a difficult pill to swallow. Gone are the days of consumers wanting a full education on the beauty and history of design. I am humbled and honored when clients tell me, “I am choosing you for this project because I believe in the importance of good design.” My hope is that we stay true to good design in the wave of online giants and ever-increasing mass-produced big box design stores.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

We also have a fine arts brokerage practice that is offered to both old and new collectors, residential and commercial, to begin or add to their collections. Additionally, we have full procurement services and installation services.
With three architects and four interior designers on staff, along with an administrative and procurement team, we apply large firm thinking and capabilities to our boutique firm agility.
Planeta Design Group is known for high-touch service. One thing we pride ourselves in is responsiveness, as we have won many projects for our creativity, smart management, ease of communication and collaboration.
We are tremendously proud to have been hired to work with amazing people and projects all over the world in addition to our expansive portfolio in Boston. In Boston’s premier suburbs, we have worked on institutions such as Harvard, as well as new developments such as 22 Liberty, Assembly Row, Fenway Center, and Andrew Square. We have a proud legacy of clients, both commercial and residential, who come back to us year after year. Reading clients’ testimonials of a job well-done, and seeing referrals consistently rolling in helps motivate us in what we do every day.
What sets us apart, in addition to our responsiveness, is our understanding of how materials go together, our amazing craftsmanship, diverse portfolio, and attention to detail. We are always creating, and never repeating. We are not a big business, but we have big dreams.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was fascinated by art and had a deep appreciation for beauty found in unexpected places. I spent much of my childhood outdoors, where I developed a great respect for nature. Nature taught me to pay close attention to how things develop and the importance of even the smallest detail; it instilled in me a patience that certainly influences my work today and how I approach projects always aiming to create a well curated design.
