Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Cullinan.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I interviewed at beauty school when I was 15. Couldn’t wait to learn the trade. Started at 17 and have worked full time since. Started out on Cape Cod. Moved to Tampa FL when I was 22. Was hired in a color specialist salon. Which is where I was trained to become a Corrective Color Specialist. Was introduced to working with an amazing team of stylists and really took my career to the next level. Going to hair shows, working with professional companies. And so on. Moving back to the Boston area I worked in Quincy, Boston, Belmont, and Waltham. During that time I started teaching color for tocco magico, an Italian color company.
Finally took the chance to start my own business. Last week was my 13yr anniversary. It has been an amazing ride and I’m working on much more. As well as getting back into education. Coming to Watertown I have grown some roots, I absolutely love my clients, they have been so amazing and supportive. Some have even stayed with me from Quincy over 20 yes ago
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not smooth. Had a non-compete with a salon, although that brought me to where I am today. Stifled by bosses who hampered my desire for education, creativity. Being micro managed. Discouraged the customer service and experience I believe so important to bring a customer back. And to differentiate from other salons. Finding good education locally to stay relevant to the times. Commuted from the Cape to Watertown for 6 yrs.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Boston Color Group – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Started in March 2004, I service women, men and children. Cutting, styling, weddings and special events, all forms of hair color, Corrective Hair Color, I offer a free consultation. I work very hard to have a detailed communication with each customer, so I am able to personalize each service. Working with the best products for excellent results and to maintain the health of their hair. Staying educated on both services and product knowledge
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Working on growing my salon and putting together a great team of passionate hair stylists. Starting an education program for stylists to hone their skills and become colorists. And some other things are in the works!
