Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Bluefort.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a lawyer by trade. However, I am a businesswoman, first!
I own and operate the Law Offices of Nicole M. Bluefort with two office locations in Lynn and Downtown Boston. The irony is that I never set out to work for myself. After graduating law school in 2010, I started my term as a judicial clerk at the Massachusetts Appeals Court working for the First African-American to be appointed to the Appeals Court, Judge Frederick Brown. After I finished my term, I started looking for work and was getting interviews, but not landing any offers.
After three months of being unemployed, I took a leap of faith and created my own opportunity. I started my own law practice. I literally fell into it. I had an informal mentor, another attorney, who took an interest in me and who hired me part-time while I was getting my practice off the ground. Through trials, tribulations, and many lessons learned, I built a successful law firm team in a short period of time and have been in business now for 6 years. As my firm was growing at a rapid pace, I became very visible in the community. I was on television ADs, billboards, and people started to recognize me, my practice was growing, and I began to receive numerous calls from business people (not lawyers) who wanted advice.
They wanted to pick my brain and learn how I went from a one-person practice to a growing firm. I spent time with them, I answered their questions, and I gave them tips, but always, being the “revenue generator” that I am, I began to think, “I have a lot of knowledge and my success is proven, why not maximize on this while at the same time helping others build their business?” And while working with my own executive coach, I birthed the idea of consulting exclusively with businesswomen who are ready and motivated to grow and generate revenue.
I have been asked why do I focus primarily on women. And the answer is simply because women are disproportionally underrepresented in business and there is a need for spaces where women are guided in their business development.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! I think one of the greatest struggles entrepreneurs face is maintaining a positive mindset especially at the beginning stages of building a business. I remember having family and friends, who thought entrepreneurship was an insurmountable path, warn me about the various ways my business could fail. Others believed that taking a traditional employment was more stable than being the head of my own company and would encourage me to instead take the traditional path. There were many critics along my entrepreneurship journey, however, I was determined to succeed, and I was able to go from being unemployed to appearing on billboards, and now I not only have one but TWO BUSINESSES: The Law Offices of Nicole M. Bluefort and Nicole Marie Consulting.
Besides the struggle to have a positive mindset, entrepreneurs wear many hats especially at the beginning stages where minimizing your expenses is crucial. When I started my law firm, I had to roll up my sleeves and I was not only the attorney but the marketing person, the secretary, the mail person, the finances department; I did it all! It was certainly overwhelming at times. At some point, I knew I had to start building a team because we had such a rapidly growing practice, but growing a business has its own unique challenges, from developing marketing strategies to staying competitive in the marketplace, hiring staff, time management, delegating tasks and cash flow management.
