Meet Nick, Ron, and Pete Cardi of Cardi’s Furniture & Matresses

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick, Ron, and Pete Cardi.

Gentlemen, please share your story with us.
One of the most unique features of Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses is the rich history.

For nearly 100 years Cardi’s has distinguished itself by offering an extensive selection of home furnishings at great prices, backed by unparalleled customer service.

Our history unfolds in the town of Itri, Italy in 1901 as Domenic and Rosa Cardi, NIROPE’s grandparents, left the only home they knew for the United States of America.

The Cardi family settled in what is now the Knightsville section of Cranston, Rhode Island. As in most new neighborhoods, the building of the town was the first priority and the Cardi family did their part. Cardi’s first opened as a general store in 1928. Nick, Ron and Peter’s father, Nicholas Cardi Sr. at age 16, left 11th grade to work full time in the store. In 1942, Nicholas Cardi Sr. decided to expand the furniture business to include appliances and carpeting, and his brother; Peter joined the business as a partner.

In 1948, they purchased the first delivery truck, a pickup. Prior to this, home deliveries were made in a sand and gravel truck borrowed from NIROPE’s grandfather.

As the years passed, Nick, Ron and Peter each aspired to a career that paralleled their father’s. After school and on weekends were times they found themselves unloading, polishing, setting up, selling, and servicing furniture.

Before retiring in 1984, Nicholas Cardi Sr. had a vision of what he called a Drawing Board Operation. He had much input into the design of what we have today, as that Drawing Board Operation turned out to be Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses showroom in Swansea, MA. His contributions to the company still abound today. His vision, progressive style, teachings, philosophy of life and business are the basis, the foundation if you will, from which Cardi’s operates today.

In 1993, in partnership with Thomasville Furniture, Cardi’s designed and built a state of the art, freestanding Thomasville Home Furnishings showroom. It was demolished in 2007 to make room for a Distribution Center expansion. Today, Thomasville merchandise can be found throughout Cardi’s Furniture showrooms including the Rhode Island Design Center, which opened its doors in January 2000.

In the summer of 1996, Cardi’s remarkable growth accelerated further with the opening of the largest showroom of its kind in all of New England. 2nd superstore on Route 2 in West Warwick, RI, is strategically located to service the valued customers in the West Bay area of Rhode Island along with parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses Swansea, MA showroom serves customers in Rhode Island’s East Bay area along with Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands.

As of January 2004, Cardi’s newest and largest showroom opened in South Attleboro, Massachusetts. This showroom is a state of the art, four story building, offering home furnishings, mattresses and accessories that will fulfill all customer needs. This location features Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses, Cardi’s Clearance Center and Cardi’s first Ashley HomeStore as well as a 200 seat Community Room available free to the public.

In November 2006, the first Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses boutique style store opened in South County, RI with the second one opening in Fall River, RI in 2008 and soon after, in Orleans and Hyannis, MA.

Also in 2008 Cardi’s launched Cardi’s Mattresses store format throughout Rhode Island, Southeastern MA and Cape Cod.

In the spring of 2016 Cardi’s beautiful new furniture and mattresses showroom, the largest on the South Shore and Cape Cod, opened in Wareham, MA.

Cardi’s first showroom in the state of New Hampshire is planned to open in December 2017 with more locations in the planning stages.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
