Meet Matthew Feldman of GymLynx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Feldman.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
GymLynx is an online marketplace where fitness trainers and instructors can browse, compare and rent space by the hour, from gyms and studios throughout the USA, for personal training or group classes.

I got this idea around Jan 2014 while talking to another aspiring fitness entrepreneur. I researching the industry for about 6 months before feeling confident about the future success. Then I got to work!! Picking a name, incorporating, getting the URL, finding developers, designing the look&feel, etc.

Soft launched in 1Q2015, but with an “online marketplace”, you need both renters and rentees. So, it took close to a year to get enough gyms to list their space and for the first gym rental. We now have over 500 participating gyms throughout the USA and about 30 in the Boston area.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This is my 4th successful startup. But it’s NEVER a smooth road. LOL.

The initial launch was difficult. With zero gyms comes zero rentals and zero revenue. I tried to focus in the Seattle area, but quickly realized, most small personal training gyms, yoga studios, CrossFit gyms were either closed midday or their owners were not around to make any business decisions.

So, I started a direct e-mail campaign and didn’t limit myself to Seattle, I immediately went nationwide, targeting the bigger cities, including Boston. I googled searched gyms and studios and wrote a semi-custom email to each one.

GymLynx – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

As a shared space rental company, we focus on fitness. We have some competition, but they have no focus. They do parties, events, fitness, business meetings, etc…

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I still remember the day I quit my full-time job to work for myself full time. My first company in NYC was founded in 1992. I started full-time there in 1994. I was so nervous, but the feeling I felt was amazing!

I guess selling it in 1996 was a pretty damn proud moment also!
