Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Cardamone.
Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island I had taken a geology class introducing me to the amazing world of rocks and the crystals that form in them. From that moment I was hooked. I had always enjoyed going to the Boston Museum of Science as a child and how cool I thought geode rocks were. The crystal formations were almost mystical looking especially under magnification. I knew I didn’t see myself in a field digging up fossils and society helped guide me (by where it assigns value) to diamonds and wow did the obsession grow. I have literally spent hours staring at different inclusions (GIA calls them value characteristics), talk about incredible. I found these little stones and what makes each of them different simply fascinating.
As far as the business taking off after seeing what I was able to design and produce with such creative passion, my best friend (with the last name of Ghirardelli) kept encouraging me to start offering my custom made jewelry for sale. At the prices I offer it’s been customer demand and referrals that has made the business what it is today. Not a morning goes by that I don’t thank my customers for allowing me to do something so enjoyable to earn and make my way in the world.

So Cardamone Diamond Company is all about jewelry… sizing and repairing it , creating and designing it, building it and maintaining it- it’s what we do. Some years back while I was still in the corporate world I had gone to a national jewelry store for a diamond that had fallen out of one of their pieces. I was told it would be two weeks for the repair- 17 weeks, three employees later we finally got our ring back.
So my grandfather had taught me growing up ‘be the change you wish to see in the world’. So using his name and my GIA education, I set on to change the retail jewelry experience, one customer at a time. It’s not about the fancy retail storefront, sales pressure or bright led lights- instead Cardamone is about one trained expert doing it better faster and less expensive than anyone else in jewelry today. See most stores have lots of overhead the customer needs to pay for (rent, utilities, employees, etc) but here at Cardamone it’s just one hardworking industry expert that helps you from the first moment I hear from you.
Most alterations (sizing, tipping, rhodium) I do same day or next day. I am just passionate about educating customers and building jewelry. Many techniques I practice are no longer used by many box stores because of the expense….to the box stores I say the opposite- what’s worth doing is worth doing right. When you build something to last a lifetime your customers don’t need to pay for ‘lifetime warranties’ that make you revisit the store within six months so they can try and sell you something else. When it’s built right the first time you get to focus on what’s really important in life, your family and your loved ones because I build pieces your grandchildren will appreciate.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I couldn’t get enough of being around my grandfather. He had immigrated from in Italy when he was eight years old. He spent his live serving in the Army for a total of 40+ years including two tours in Korea and being an instructor at West Point. He taught me about being hardworking, integrity and trust. I was always curiously smart having earned a Masters Degree in International Trade and traveling some 44 countries to date. I always had an insatiable appetite for learning. I realized the one biggest thing that was missing from my career in the corporate world was passion, I needed to do something I loved and after doing this for nearly ten years I can proudly say I found it! It’s not just one aspect of this job I love so much, it’s all of it. It’s being with the customer the first time they spot their first inclusion under magnification, it’s about underpromising and overdelivering, it’s teaching people about what makes quality jewelry and metal work, and how to determine the value of a diamond and what those GIA 4Cs really mean. It’s working late into the night designing a ring after meeting a customer and their reaction the next morning seeing what they just realized they wanted all along designed specifically for them.
