Meet Marjorie Kaye of Galatea Fine Art in SOWA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marjorie Kaye.

Marjorie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a working artist, I became interested in the idea of artists creating their own destinies. Artist run galleries have been in existence for quite a while, at least since the 70s. Financially it made sense, too. Artists coming together to start and maintain their own community. In 2009, after a period of finding artists to collaborate with, with help from my partner George Shaw, and other artists that came to lend a hand, I opened Galatea Fine Art in the South End. After 8 years of hard work and opportunity, we are a thriving community. In order for the gallery to go forward, we are morphing into a non-profit, with a brand new director, Hilary Tait-Norod. Personally, I will be freelancing, helping artists organize their practice, as well as continuing my own studio work in painting and sculpture.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always learning curves. One of the reasons we are changing formats is to ensure that our membership has a greater sense of involvement and that we come together as an even tighter community. This way, our individual skills ensure that the gallery, as an entity, thrives in the best way possible.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Galatea Fine Art story. Tell us more about the business.
Galatea Fine Art is an artist-run cooperative. We specialize in contemporary art, with quite a diverse group of artists. You will find sculpture, painting, photography, mixed media and more, in many genres.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As our gallery continues to grow, especially with the membership taking on more responsibility, we will be able to venture into more outreach, including art fairs, and to do more community oriented projects, such as inviting more musicians, poets, etc. to perform in the gallery space.
