Meet Lou Rod Cueva of MLR Artist Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lou Rod Cueva.

Lou Rod, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my career as an Intern at NEXT Model Management in Miami, FL at the age of seventeen. During my time there I quickly learned the fast and forever changing talent industry. I earned a degree at Johnson & Wales University in Marketing Communications with a concentration in Fashion. It was a visual and hands on program much like how I conduct business day to day.

I opened the doors to MLR Artist Management in October 2011 to guide the careers of top hair and makeup artists. A group of talented individuals who are passionate about their trade but in the eyes of society looked at as a hobby and not a “real” profession. I stepped up to professionally represent, market, and manage their careers using the experience I’ve gained on the field and in the classroom. I am proud to report that under my leadership, my stylists have successfully worked with major brands: Self Magazine, HBO, New Balance, David Barton Gym, Safety 1st, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Cover Girl, JetBlue Airways, Walhburgers, Nestle, ELLE Magazine, Massachusetts Women’s Conference, Sales Force, People Magazine, Mimecast, and beyond.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No easy task building a business as a minority (Latino/gay) and in tough economy. Luckily, Boston was an underserved market so there was room to play. At the time that I started MLR it was difficult trying to market/pitch our luxury services because consumers/corporations were cutting back and tightening their wallets.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MLR Artist Management – what should we know?
Most proud of:
MLR Artist Management believes in social responsibility and empowering women through beauty applications. I’ve created an interactive and innovative mobile beauty bar to connect, inspire, and educate women. In the recent past we have activated our pop up experience for The One Fund, American Red Cross, and The Boston Bruins Foundation, and Wayfair. It’s beautiful to give back to the community we serve.
