Meet Lorrie DiCesare of Hourglass Gift Gallery in Melrose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorrie DiCesare.

Lorrie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Rochester New York. My career was in Business Insurance and lasted for 23 years. After moving to Melrose, MA I was looking to make a change. I had a deep passion for the ARTS. I was already a jewelry maker, working in metal stamping and other jewelry techniques. I had some experience in Retail and some education in Business Retail management. I decided to open a small shop and pursue my true passion, in the Arts in 1999. I moved to a larger space in year 2000 on Main Street and after 18 years have created an artist haven for our community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We are very lucky to have opened a business in Melrose and I never lose sight of that. Not losing focus when times are tough, generating sales in slow periods and keeping the balance. Being patient in these times and HARD WORK. It’s truly a Labor of Love.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hourglass Gift Gallery – what should we know?
One of my main responsibilities is buying for the Shop, choosing Fine Artists for our Gallery wall and keeping it fresh by offering guest artists along with our permanent artists throughout the year. Hourglass has everything one could want from a small, community-minded Gift Gallery. U.S. made gifts and jewelry, fine art at every price point, and frequent opportunities for patrons to buy pieces that benefit local and national charities. We feature a “small wall” These are original paintings that are 8 x 8 and smaller and $150 and lower. We offer jewelry from across the US and Canada and we are also proud to offer Fair Trade products. I wanted to give my community and the people in the Greater Boston area, a place where they can buy truly unique pieces of art alongside crafts and jewelry, all hand-made by local and nationally-recognized artisans. My passion for art and the people who create it is obvious wherever you look in the shop, in every nook and cranny. I believe in the idea that art should be for everyone, that’s why the gallery will carry paintings that sell for hundreds right next to accessories you can pick up for $10. Everybody deserves the chance to own something unique and hand-made.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My customers, first and their many referrals they have sent our way. My Employees and family for their loyal devotion and creative minds. Our City, for all the support they have given us over the years, through the Chamber of Commerce.

I buy jewelry from here for my relatives and love the paintings. I would like to see some more high end pottery in the store. I love the store.

We’ve been customers for years, since Hourglass was on West Emerson St! Theres ALWAYS something there, and I feel comfortable just ducking in for a minute to see whats new even if I don’t buy anything. But I usually do…there’s always something I can’t resist!
