Meet Liz Sacco of Diabetic Dabs in Middleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Sacco.

Liz, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One of the greater challenges in my life, my son’s type 1 diabetes, has provided me with an amazing opportunity to help others overcome an obstacle faced by most diabetic patients and their families; convenient and hygienic blood removal/disposal after glucose testing. In 2011, when my then nine-year old son was diagnosed with the disease, I quickly realized the absence of a safe and appropriate method of wiping away the blood after each glucose test.

My son, upon lancing himself to test his blood several times on a daily basis, would usually wipe this blood on his clothing or on the inside of the testing kit case. After thoroughly searching the market, I discovered that there was no convenient solution available to resolve this issue. So I conceived, patented, and developed Diabetic Dabs®.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is exciting and challenging at the same time. It certainly has not always been a smooth road. One of my biggest hurdles was product development.

Envisioning the dabs was easy, taking it from conceptualization to finished product was not an easy task. Once the product was complete commercialization was our next step.

Again, it is an ongoing process filled with successes and failures. It is important to learn from the mistakes and take time to enjoy the accomplishments.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Diabetic Dabs – what should we know?
Diabetic Dabs® are a companion product to the diabetes monitoring and diagnostic devices. Dabs® are non-toxic, highly absorbent sheets that are designed with an adhesive backing to fit conveniently into any blood glucose testing kit. Although the dabs® were a result of my son’s diagnosis with type 1 they are not limited to diabetes.

Anyone who lives with a condition that requires testing their blood could benefit from using the dabs®. Our goal is to deliver the most convenient and optimal solution for blood removal and disposal. Being a member of the diabetes community, I am passionate about helping to simplify and improve the lives of families like ours. As such, we proudly donate a portion of the proceeds to diabetes research.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There is a long list of people who deserve a lot of credit! I have been blessed with a supportive family that has allowed me to pursue this journey. I have been fortunate to have met mentors along the way that have guided me and taught me in different capacities of the business. I have established relationships with people I can now call my friends that have contributed to the growth of myself and the business. I am a firm believer in surrounding yourself with the right people. I feel fortunate to have a network that allows me access to a wealth of information and resources. No one succeeds on their own, people helping people is what it is all about.
