Meet Liya of LIYA in Back Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liya.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am born in a small country in Eastern Europe, called Bulgaria. I am a performing and recording artist, songwriter, model and entrepreneur. I have wanted to be a singer for as long as I can remember. I started taking private piano and vocal lessons at the age of 6 and performed at numerous venues in my home country Sofia all throughout high school. In the meantime, when I was 13 I also started modeling. During high school I was able to work with some of the top photographers and designers in Bulgaria.

At the age of 18, after graduating high school, I moved to the United States to pursue a higher musical education, while keeping modeling as one of my favorite hobbies.

I spent my first two years in the States studying Music at University of Massachusetts Boston, where I was getting classical training. In 2016 I transferred to the school of my dreams — Berklee College of Music. At Berklee I am currently studying Performance and Songwriting under the Professional Music major. The opportunities at the college are never-ending, so studying here has been an amazing experience for me.

In 2017 I released my debut single “Superpower.” I have since performed “Superpower” at many events such as the Fashion on Fire gala during Boston fashion week, at Dirty Water Media and most recently in March at the Bulgarian Liberation Day concert organized by the Bulgarian Center of New England.

My day-to-day life right now mainly consists of writing music, studying and working, but I also still enjoy modeling and of course, hanging out with my friends. In November of 2017 I joined the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston and have had a blast hanging out and learning from my little sister.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been, and continues to be, filled with ups and downs but I like to focus on the positive side of things. I am extremely fortunate to be doing what I love so every day that I face struggles is just another day I remind myself that I am working towards something I truly love and that is not meant to be easy. I know there are people with far greater problems in life, so I simply try to do the best I can and be better with each day. I also have an amazing support system behind me – my family and friends are the ones helping me get through the hardest of times.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LIYA – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
First and foremost, above all, I am an artist. I love being on stage performing because I feel a certain intimacy with the audience through my music; something I cannot find anywhere else. I am also a songwriter which has been an incredible creative outlet in my life that has allowed me to express who I am through music. Last, but not least, I consider myself an entrepreneur. In the past year I have worked hard on establishing LIYA as more than just an artist, but as a brand.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After I graduate from Berklee College of Music in 2019, my plan is to move out to Los Angeles and start releasing my original music as a performing/recording artist and songwriter and to further develop my career as a musician.
