Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Zappala.
Lindsay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Quite honestly, I never liked working in “corporate America” or under the reigns of a manager, which I did for many (many) years before starting Studio Five. I always found the daily grind to be exhausting and a total life drain. I continued working at various marketing companies simply to earn money, not because I enjoyed it.
When I was pregnant with my son (so almost nine years ago, woah! time flies) I remember sitting behind my computer, agonizing about returning from maternity leave and I hadn’t even started my leave. It was that bad. I had taken a few pilates classes in the past and really enjoyed them. For one reason or another, I began to research teacher training certifications in the area. On a whim, I registered myself for a Mat Pilates teacher training program at Boston Body Pilates. The start date of the training was just six weeks postpartum, but that didn’t stop me. It was a crazy experience and a total blur for the most part, but I did it! I got my teacher training certification. From there, it was a series of events (and studios) that lead me to open, own and operate what is now a full functioning fitness studio and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT I DO!!! Studio 5, more commonly referred to as S5, is almost five years old and has blossomed from a hobby to a very successful business. My focus was to create a work/life balance that allowed me to be home for my kids and also, have a sense of self outside the home. Somehow that dream manifested into a reality!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There certainly have been struggles along the way but I always knew failure was not an option. In order for me to be a good mom, a happy wife, a role model, I had to discover and pave my own road to happiness. With a 3 and 5 year old (at the time) opening S5 was tough, both emotionally and physically. When I first opened the studio, I was the only instructor teaching upwards to 22 classes per week. In addition, I also had to figure out how to run a business, something that totally foreign to me. I had very few clients and often had to muster up the energy to teach to one or two people. Through tears, exhaustion and self-doubt, I always knew had to make it work and although, I wanted to quit and walk away from S5 a million plus times in my first year (or two) of business, I didn’t. I followed through with all that I put out into the universe. I re-created myself over and over again to handle the demands of motherhood and entrepreneurship. Most importantly, I chose to believe in my dream. Once I believed in myself and my purpose, it was the defining moment. I am forever grateful that I weathered the storm because well here I am, able to tell my story to Boston Voyager Magazine and this too, is a pretty cool moment.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Oh boy! Where do I begin, LOL?! I grew up on Plum Island, so I’m a beach kid. Ran amuck most of my childhood, which I believe helped shape my sense of independence. Went to Newburyport High School, which was a colorful experience. I am an only child, sans only child syndrome. I played competitive soccer until I blew my knee out in college. Speaking of, I graduated from Emerson College with a degree in advertising and a minor in public speaking. I have always and I mean always been a social butterfly. Never the best student but always liked by my teachers and coaches. Sort of a wanderer by nature. I am an Aries, so let’s be honest, I am fiery, too. I grew up liking soccer, boys and social events in no particular order. Eventually, I got my sh*t together, thankfully. After Emerson and working in marketing for years upon years, I went back to school, Simmons College, where I studied Nutrition and Health Sciences. The beginning of the end, I guess. It took me until my adult years to set priorities, make strides to achieve them and ultimately, achieve them. Phew.
