Meet Leroy McGhee of Leroy’s Styles in New Hampshire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leroy McGhee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Leroy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to New Hampshire In 1996. I was born and raised in Boston, MA. The Roxbury section of the city. I initially came to the seacoast on a 10 day vacation. Being a union plumber out of Boston and working on the big dig and other commercial projects throughout the city for 10 years. During my 10 day jaunt up the seacoast. I met a young woman my wife, my soulmate, my everything. Over some time, Theresa and I decided that we should to act as one. So we combined our families together.

Soon after moving to New Hampshire I realized that getting a haircut was not an easy process. Over the next few years I had two options. Go down to Boston for a haircut or do it myself. One night after an awesome grooming experience that I gave to myself. A bright light blindingly shined. I said to myself you are on par with most professionals, if not better.

At the time, I was not doing any plumbing work. Union jobs were hard to come by. Non-union wages were extremely below my skill level. So I worked in a manufacturing plant for a few years in the maintenance dept. One afternoon about 75 employees were laid off I was one of them.

To be honest I was happy because I knew it was time for change. My body was starting to feel the ware and tare of working like that. So after a few weeks of looking for a job. I find one. Back in manufacturing. One evening after an awful day at work. I get home and I start doing some research on barbering schools. I have had enough. After researching for a few days I start to realize none of the schools are within 50 miles of where I live. I realize that this dream might not happen. Hold on there is a cosmetology school a half a mile. From my house. The next day I enrolled in Empire Beauty School.

After working 2 jobs for 19 months and going to school 4 nights a week I finally graduated. The next day I went to work for Supercuts. The first eight months were scary. I was written up more time than anyone would have liked. Then one day it all fell into place.

During my five years at Supercuts. I established a cliental one of my clients a true friend of mine. Constantly he would ask me about going into business with him. His vision was similar to mine. So we started Leroy’s Styles September 14th 2007.

Three years later I bought him out.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride. My Business is located in downtown Somersworth, New Hampshire. In the fall of 2012 the city decide to renovate downtown. That took 2/12 years to complete. To be honest, if it weren’t for my clients climbing mountains of dirt. Being dedicated patrons I would not have made it. It looked like a war zone for months. Other business folded during this time.

Please tell us about Leroy’s Styles.
What we specialize in is diversity. Between my staff and I, there isn’t a hair service we can’t make happen at a high level.

I’m also proud of the community work we have done for children in our community.
We have had numerous charity events over the years.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Patience and believing in yourself.
