Meet Lauren Pimpare of Tomorrow’s Women TODAY and The Boston Women’s Leadership Council

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Pimpare.

Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ten years ago, the vision of bringing together emerging female leaders across all industries and providing them with opportunities for professional and personal enrichment was born. My expansion of this network now includes woman attending local universities and female executives for whom I provide a supportive community. Connecting woman at an early age and fostering that sense of “we” and “together” will help build a better tomorrow.

I am proud that I can provide my members with a community where they not only learn from women who have “been there/done that,” but where they can be encouraged to use their voices: to have conversations about topics that are important to our futures, conversations about salary negotiations and equal pay, conversations about how to decide between daycare, a nanny, or staying home, conversations about how you fail, and how to pick yourself up again.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In 2011 my second child was born. He suffered a traumatic brain injury during his birth due to a loss of oxygen. My life was forever changed…and re-shaped.

Raising a child who is severally handicapped with multiple disabilities, has enlightened me. I have a deeper understanding of not only what is important to me, but also what is important for those whose voices are not heard. I believe that the work I am doing can help both women and children find their voices…and be heard. I believe in wage equality, and that no parent should have to mourn a child who dies due to the complications of a premature birth. I believe that the voices of more women should be heard on boards of directors and that all children should have high- quality access to health care – including non-traditional therapies. I believe that together, focusing on these efforts will ensure that the next generation and generations to come will not only thrive but also flourish, with an understanding of equality and care.

My previous work in healthcare, my work with Tomorrow’s Women TODAY, and as the mother of a child who cannot speak for himself, have all defined who I am, and the legacy I hope to leave. I draw on these experiences to better position the voices of women and children for tomorrow’s world.

Tomorrow’s Women TODAY and The Boston Women’s Leadership Council connect members with the most prominent, recognized, female business leaders in Boston – and to each other. Our members embrace the belief that together we are more powerful in reaching our goals. Tomorrow’s Women TODAY and The Boston Women’s Leadership Council are vibrant communities of female leaders who are driven, supportive, inquisitive, and passionate about enhancing themselves – and one another.

As I mention earlier, I am proud that I can provide my members with a community where they not only learn from women who have “been there/done that,” but where they can be encouraged to use their voices: to have conversations about topics that are important to our futures, conversations about salary negotiations and equal pay, conversations about how to decide between daycare, a nanny, or staying home, conversations about how you fail, and how to pick yourself up again.

We set ourselves apart from other organizations by staying small (which fosters closer relationships), maintaining a membership that consists of passionate and driven women at similar levels in their careers, and by constantly providing members with intimate opportunities to network with the most powerful women in Massachusetts. While developing TWToday and The Boston Women’s Leadership Council, we planned for our members to have a forum to discuss professional work challenges, salary negotiations or career transitions…what we didn’t plan for were the strong friendships that have developed. Members have not only helped one another develop professionally, but many have attended one another’s weddings, housewarming parties, or children’s birthday celebrations. Our members and their connections are truly what set us apart.

What were you like growing up?
I think I was perfect…my family and cousin will tell you another story! I was assertive, an athlete…sometimes a bit too pushy on and off the field.
A story that captures a bit of what I was like growing up occurred during my senior year of high school. I had been accepted to several schools and had narrowed it down to two….but the one I really wanted to go to didn’t give me enough Financial Aid and Scholarship to make it the right match for my family.

So, I picked up the phone and called the College and asked to speak to the Dean of Admissions…he picked up…and we had a short call where I expressed how much I wanted to go to the school, how I could contribute to the school as an athlete, a musician (I played the cello), and a scholar. The following week I received a new and improved Financial Aid package in the mail…with a kind letter from the Dean. I spent the next 4 years staying true to my promised contributions and was awarded the Senior Excellence Award at Graduation.
