Meet Laura Napoleone of Hudson Derby Stables in Plympton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Napoleone.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I spent over 20 years as a corporate executive in the healthcare industry…my corporate background includes organizational development, employment, compensation, benefits, marketing, advertising and more…. I “retired” to take care of my daughters and during their younger years I successfully started and ran a few small businesses out of my home…

More recently I started Lead Change Solutions (www.leadchangesolutins.com) which offers business consulting services to the equine industry. In addition, Lead Change Solutions offers advertising, marketing & consignment services to help sell horses.

When my youngest daughter graduated from St. Andrews University, we started Hudson Derby Stables (www.hudsonderbystables.com) which became the home for the consignment horses as well the beginning of our Hunter Jumper barn.

My daughter, Nicole Napoleone, has had a very successfully horse showing career…she was yearend Reserve Champion for Massachusetts and New England in 3′ Hunters…as well as an active member of her college’s IHSA team all four years. Nicole was president of St. Andrew’s Hunt Seat riding council and was one of their team leaders…

We combined Nicole’s equine experience with my business experience to create Hudson Derby Stables.

Has it been a smooth road?
All startup companies/businesses have their challenges…and we are still experiencing them! It took us over a year to find the perfect place to start our business… Our business has several aspects that all need individual attention…caring for horses (24/7 job), training horses, riding lesson program, horse showing program and more… balancing this work, hiring the appropriate staff, setting your fee structure, preparing the right advertising, etc are all challenges we deal with every day!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hudson Derby Stables story. Tell us more about the business.
Hudson Derby Stables is a private Hunter Jumper facility located on Hayward Farms in Plympton, MA. We have 10 stalls with in/out paddocks, grass pastures, large outdoor riding arena, trails, cranberry bogs and more…. We offer lessons, training, leasing, showing & more on our wonderful equine partners. Horses are the foundation of our business!

We were so fortunate to find Jeff & Lisa Randall, owners of Hayward Farms…their farm consists of 100 beautiful acres with 8 working cranberry bogs…they are a wonderful family that make coming to work everyday extremely enjoyable!

There is a lot of competition in our area…. we are striving to offer top horse showing services at more affordable prices in an environment that promotes success while thoroughly enjoying the sport! There is a lot of natural stress involved in riding and competing in the horse world…we aim to give our clients all the tools they need to happily reach their individual riding goals!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our industry is directly tied to the health of the economy…the past 10 years have been a struggle for many boarding facilities…just caring for one horse has been a struggle for many horse owners. As with many businesses…the high-end facilities have continued to succeed but had to become smarter about their operations. Horse sale & leasing prices have come down over the past 10 years…all while caring for horses has gone way up… To stay in business, you must become flexible…changing your services & prices to meet the needs of your customers.

That being said the economy is showing signs of growing and becoming healthier…this will directly affect our industry…having horses in your life is a luxury and horse showing is a very expensive sport…for any of us to succeed we need to be very smart about our business choices.
