Meet Laura Dove of Laura Dove Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Dove.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started in elementary school with a pinhole camera and a deep love of storytelling.

My whole life, I’ve been drawn to the dream world. I wanted light and color and depth to mean something in each photograph I took. I wanted to keep memories in tangible forms so I could recall them at a glance long after the memories had begun to fade.

By high school I was teaching the photography portion of graphic arts, Hanging out in the darkroom during study breaks, developing film. I learned my way around digital photography throughout college and began shooting Weddings in 2007. In 2008 I was burnt out. I needed to find my way back. I put photography on the side and started, what I then called, my “big girl job” in the medical field.

Life brought many ups and downs, and I always had my camera with me to document for myself, for family, for friends. The odd job here and there. Eventually, it hit me again. I capture life. Real life. Real moments. Real feelings. That’s what I LOVE. In 2016, as a first-time mom with a new little life, trying to navigate this new world, I began documenting EVERYTHING.

I had a big decision to make; go back to work full time or live life with a fulfilling career doing what I love. After many midnight discussions with my husband, I decided to dive in head first and take photography to the next level. My inspiration was Motherhood. The crazy, beautiful chaos.

I LOVE being a photographer. I am inspired every day by the connections people have with those they love. Whether it’s an expecting mother, the miracle of birth, the quiet breathing of a baby, or a busy growing family, I take pride in capturing those real and genuine moments.

I am a firm believer that everyone has a story. My passion is documenting that story. Posing is overrated. Give me your beautiful chaos.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been anything but smooth. My biggest struggle came from within myself. There was always a level of doubt, maybe it came from a lack of confidence. The trend seemed to lean towards the perfect family, staring straight at the camera smiling. Light and airy.

While I crave the messy, the off-centered, the connection, a bit of moodiness and grit.

Where did I fit in? Finding yourself is never easy. I’ve gotten to a point where I have a strong sense of who I am as a photographer. What I like. I see the finished product before I’ve captured the moment. It opens your eyes to really see and be in the present moment.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a photographer. I specialize in telling stories. My focus is Motherhood (before, during and after birth) and Family photography. I’m most proud of my growth throughout all these years. I always strive for more and I’m constantly learning. Always immersed in a new project that pushes my boundaries (currently a postpartum project documenting the lesser talked about side of recovering after a birth).

As of late, I’ve been dabbling with cinematography. Taking workshops and practicing on anything and everything. I hope to offer that to clients soon! My clients are all so wonderful. They inspire me. I get to meet a lot of families and document their journey.

Watch the family dynamics shift as a new one is welcomed in with such big love. Share emotions and meaningful memories. See siblings meet for the first time or great-grandma cry as she looks at this new little love. It means the world to me. I think that in itself is what sets me apart. I’m committed to you, to your moment, to your story.

What were you like growing up?
I am the middle of three kids and my family is crazy loud. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Growing up, we were always active. My love of nature and camping came from my father. He’s always been the rock in our family and I get a lot of my personality from him.

I’m also a proud mama to a sweet, adorable and loving little boy. He absolutely fuels my passion. My husband is my support. He inspires me daily. I have a Goldendoodle and strongly feel that animals are part of the family. My life is bumpy and chaotic and I couldn’t imagine it any differently.

I’m an extroverted introvert. There’s really not much a good cup of tea can’t fix. I love daydreams and pretty light and am finding my son shares that interest. A good black and white photo with a bit of grain can’t be beaten. The sun on my face is my happy place.
