Meet Kristy Fassler, ND and Leon Hecht, ND of North Coast Family Health in Portsmouth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Fassler, ND and Leon Hecht, ND.

Kristy and Leon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
North Coast Family Health was among a few pioneering clinics on the seacoast to emphasize proactive healing with patients when we opened our naturopathic family practice in January 1990. We were unique in that we did physical exams and ordered lab tests similar to other physicians, but we treated patients with natural therapies and lifestyle changes rather than drugs or surgery. Our practice grew and flourished over the years as patients shared about how they were healed of asthma, anxiety, joint pain, fatigue, hormone imbalances and other conditions, with friends and family.

Drs. Fassler and Hecht were instrumental along with a handful of others in the effort to license Naturopathic Doctors in New Hampshire. We encouraged numerous patients to write letters, make phone calls and testify in front of legislative committees regarding the healing they experienced through our care. Governor Merrill signed the bill to license naturopathic doctors in New Hampshire in 1994. About that time, Dr. Fassler was invited to speak on a national TV program, The Other Side, along with a patient she had helped recover from Ulcerative Colitis and endometriosis. Naturopathic medicine’s effectiveness was making national news!

In the early 2000s, Dr. Jennifer Quinn joined our practice and Dr. Hecht started treating patients with tick born infections like Lyme disease and co-infections including Bartonella and Babesia. We all started to see many patients with tick born infections and by 2010 we estimated at least 85% of our patients were infected. The unfortunate thing about tick infections is lab tests are a very unreliable means of diagnosis and most doctors aren’t trained to recognize and treat them. We are Lyme Literate doctors who treat these acute and chronic infections in New England where they are truly epidemic!

Has it been a smooth road?
The primary challenges in the early years of North Coast Family Health were educating our community about the true healing potential our therapies provided for patients. Dr. Fassler recalls a patient who was having monthly infusions for her severe eczema, costing her insurance company $5,000 per infusion in Boston. As it turned out the patient had nutritional deficiencies and her eczema was cured with supplementation and lifestyle changes. Our therapies are cost effective because they are curative rather than suppressive of symptoms.

The effort to license naturopathic doctors in New Hampshire was naturally met with heavy opposition from the state medical society. Once our licensing bill was signed by the governor in 1994, a legislative effort to repeal our licensing law ensued. Several years of effort and testimony in the state legislature were necessary to educate representatives and senators about the distinctions between our four-year postgraduate level naturopathic medical education and the 3-month mail order degree options that were advertised in magazines.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with North Coast Family Health – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
North Coast Family Health is known as the clinic to turn to for finding the means to reverse disease and restore health. We look at each individual’s unique symptom pattern of illness to discover the clues that will assist in healing. For some people, few factors need correcting, while for others numerous facets need attention to restore people to fully functioning and healthy lives.

Many of our patients have been to 15 or more other specialists and are told they need to be on an anti-depressant, lacking a diagnosis or satisfactory treatment options. We specialize in healing patients with chronic and acute conditions by identifying the underlying causes of their symptoms and treating those causes. The causes may be one or many – including dietary, infection, inflammatory responses to triggers, hormonal imbalances, digestive disturbances, environmental toxins, genetic predispositions, nutritional deficiencies, and more.

We are most proud of the results patients experience after seeing us for limiting or even disabling conditions. We love seeing people with their lives back, fully enjoying the enriching activities and relationships they care about.

What sets us apart from other clinics is we have been established in our community since 1990 as the doctors to see if you are serious about taking charge of your health. We enjoy empowering patients with the confidence they will heal with appropriate guidance, choices, therapies, and education.

Currently, we are very enthusiastic about our program to prevent and reverse symptoms of cognitive decline. Dr. Hecht is spearheading this program in conjunction with Dr. Dale Bredesen’s national Alzheimer’s protocols and research. Patients between 40 and 70 are ideal candidates for this program.
