Meet Kelly Stevens of Hourglass Photography in North Shore, Nahant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Stevens.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hourglass Photography started with real estate photography. I have a civil engineering background and lots of interest in houses and construction. I thought I could combine these interests with my passion for photography. Unfortunately I found myself wanting more from my photos – it was like there was something missing.

Emotion is what I was longing for. I want to feel a spark from my photography and capturing love between two people is about as meaningful and powerful as it gets. I fell in love with wedding photography ever since. It’s my goal to capture that raw emotion between two people and deliver photos that won’t just take them back to those memories, but convey the way they felt too.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been extremely rewarding and exciting to pursue wedding photography. Up to this point it has been relatively smooth as well. Starting a wedding photography business is difficult and can be daunting. My business is in its second year and because of the unwavering support from my family and fellow photographers, it is going strong.

The most important thing I have learned so far is that I will never stop learning. I always have my camera in tow and I am constantly tweaking and expanding my approach and processes. I also make a point to attend a workshop every year. This is really helpful to learn new strategies, meet other talented photographers, and re-evaluate my methods. Working with and learning from other photographers is beyond essential. I am so thankful for all of the new friends I have made because of this passion. Not everyone is welcoming, but when you find the right connections it’s a great support system and a great resource to learn from and contribute to.

Hourglass Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a wedding photographer whose goal is that you forget about the camera and focus on why we are celebrating. We’re celebrating your unique love, your true story, your wonderful selves!

My photographs won’t just capture your moments, but your feelings as well. I want you to live in your adventure and be able to relive these times and feelings over again. My style is organic and natural. I don’t force photographs or edit them to the latest fad. I give you the space to be you, your connection and emotion is what you’ll feel through the photographs. That is timeless.

I like to focus on the real, the unplanned, the life. I’m not a fan of stiff and cookie cutter poses. Instead, every couple I work with is unique and I like to get to know their personalities to bring life into their photos. It means so much to me that I can deliver something with meaning to you!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every time I get to work with and get to know a couple is so rewarding and such fun! The proudest moment I might’ve had is the first email I received from a couple after they received their photos. They loved them and kept raving about how much the photos meant to them! This was such a great feeling. I had a blast getting to know two wonderful people and they really appreciated the work I was able to give back to them! I might’ve cried a few tears of joy and awe that I was able to have such an impact. I want all of the couples I work with to have this same reaction, so I make sure I give them all the very best experience I can!
