Meet Karina Mattei of Karina Mattei Jeweler/Designer in Brookline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Mattei.

Karina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always gravitated to working with my hands and the process of creating. In fact, I come from a long line of Italian craftspeople. This is where I excelled and what I pursued. Fabricating jewelry has nourished me for four decades.

I began making silver filigree jewelry back in the 70’s selling pieces on college campuses and street corners. Life was more relaxed in the 70’s! After graduating with a degree in Art and Craft and eventually moving to Boston in the early 80’s I worked for a Boston jewelry shop. I quickly found out I wanted more control over my craft, the feel of the shop and the integrity of the business.

So I became independent and rented space in the Boston jewelers building for a time and then set up shop in the Arcade building in Coolidge Corner. My jewelry evolved from simple silver pieces to more complex higher end designs. I have made 100’s of custom engagement rings and wedding bands through the years. Each one specialized to the bride and groom to be. As well as a vast variety of pendants, bracelets, earrings, belt buckles, cufflinks and many other unique requests.

Has it been a smooth road?
No road is completely smooth. Building a business takes long hours, hard work and years of cultivating skill and customer trust. Fortunately, my business has thrived, many repeat customers and positive word of mouth advertising have been established and maintained. I continue to benefit from new skills, increased challenges and endless inspiration.

My friends and family have always been and continue to be a cornerstone to my firm foundation.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Karina Mattei Jeweler/Designer – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My work is handcrafted using “the lost wax process” of first hand sculpting a wax model. The wax sculpture is then casted in the metal of choice. Other pieces are fabricated directly from metal sheets and/or wire using a variety of construction methods.

The majority of my pieces are composed of precious metals and stones. My work has gratefully been appreciated and received awards along the way.

There are very few production pieces, so each piece is unique and crafted for that particular customer. My skills and approach lean towards Old World craftsmanship with very little 3D or CAD designs or production. Pencil and paper, as well as saws and files, are all very much in use. This allows me a level of personalization that high technology cannot always convey.

The part of my long career that gives me the most joy and pride is the uncompromised integrity and the mastery of the craft cultivated through the many years. These qualities have brought me deep satisfaction and have allowed me to thrive steadily. Many of my customers have developed into meaningful friendships. Happily, my work is appreciated and has been awarded along the way.

As the world had its ups and downs, my business continued to flourish as well as provide me with a constant source of nourishment, accomplishment, independence and many new adventures.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Brookline has a very diverse and liberal population with many interesting businesses and services. It has always felt safe and is very walkable. There are wonderful restaurants and easy access to the GreenLine.

The town over the years has NOT been very supportive to the local businesses. One of our big challenges was parking. We had to fight for it. Also, the rents are making it impossible for shops to stay. We have lost many locally owned businesses due to the ever-increasing rents.

I am so thrilled to see that you have introduced Karina to the Boston Community and beyond. I have worked with Karina for many, many years. She has designed many different pieces for me; rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I have also bought pieces that she had already made and was selling in her store. She is so easy to work with- she always has a positive attitude and can do anything! My pieces are timeless and it is so much fun to add stones to existing pieces. I have sent others to her and over the years, they have continued to have her do more and more work for them.
She is awesome. This article captures her so well. Don’t hesitate to call on her for any occasion- she will make it special!
