Meet Julie Erickson of Endurance Pilates and Yoga in South End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Erickson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Julie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a lifelong exerciser and it gives me chills sometimes when I think about how lucky I am to workout for a living! When I graduated from college, the first thing I did was take a wine course so I knew how to order a decent bottle when out to dinner with business colleagues. The second thing I did was obtain my certification to teach group exercise.

That was 22 years ago and since then, I have studied almost every form of movement out there- I have over 30 certifications and I am still currently working on an additional Pilates certification in NYC! I feel like we can never learn enough about movement and I take my continuing education very seriously- I will forever be a student as well as a teacher!

While building a career and finishing my MBA, I continued to teach fitness part time in the greater Boston area. After the birth of my son, I decided to make fitness my full-time job. I called my business Find Your Form and spent my time teaching and running from one studio to another gym and back to my client’s homes for many years.

In 2010, I had the opportunity to open my own studio, Endurance Pilates and Yoga just outside of Boston, on Mass Ave in Arlington, MA. Our business grew very quickly and we loved being part of the Arlington community. We attracted students from neighboring towns and some folks did find their way out of Boston to work out with us!

In 2014, I had the pleasure of winning Boston Magazine’s “Best of Boston Personal Trainer” and upon coming to the end of my lease, made the decision to move Endurance into the South End in Boston. It was, undoubtedly, the best business decision I have ever made! We have been in the South End since January 2015 and I am thrilled to have signed a lease through August 2021 so we will definitely enjoy a few more years in our current space. I love the environment that we have created in the studio- folks are welcome and friendly even though our workouts are tough and will absolutely change physiques, if not a student’s entire life for the better. It makes my soul happy to know that Endurance can bring such joy of movement to so many!

I currently spend 5 days a week teaching in Boston and 2 days a week teaching in NYC. I’ve worked with all types of folks from the weekend warrior triathlete to professional NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB players and their coaches. In NY, many of the young ladies that I train are professional models and it is such a thrill to see their work in magazines like Vogue, for companies like Guess and Victoria’s Secret. It is my lifelong dream to work with these type of folks that use their bodies for a living and I am blessed to have such a diverse group of beautiful movers that I help move just a little bit better!

My most rewarding students have a little bit of a different story. I am thrilled to work with athletes that are challenged- whether it be an amputation, paralysis, a brain injury, eating disorder or cancer treatment, my proudest moments as a teacher are in assisting these folks to take control of their bodies and their lives. Although I can teach most forms of exercise, my passion is for Pilates. Pilates is a decade old regimen created by Joseph Pilates. Mr. Pilates called his method Contrology and he felt, “Pilates (Contrology) is gaining the mastery of your mind over the complete control of your body”.

For my students that are dealing with a new body or situation, teaching them how to control their muscles and movement not only gives them a powerful sense of control over their muscles, it assists them in asserting control within their entire lives. We don’t just teach fitness at Endurance, we give people the tools to grow. At least once per week, I hear from a student, “You, your studio, your teachers- you have absolutely changed my life.”

Endurance is so much more than just fitness and I am so very proud that I have been able to create a business that enriches and enhances so many different lives! As we ramp up in NYC and continue to grow so much in Boston, I hope to reach as many folks as possible with our special way of moving and changing lives!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
February 2015- really, the whole winter 2015 was a disaster. There were 100 inches of snow in Boston in my second month in business, I didn’t even cover fixed costs with revenue that month- we had to close every Monday, commutes were 2 hours long and so many students canceled. It was the only time I have ever doubted myself as a business owner.

It is always a challenge to be a mom and a business owner. Too many times at sporting events, I would hear, “Oh, it’s so nice that you were finally able to make it,” with regard to my son’s games. When Alex was very little, I used to bring him with me sometimes to morning appointments- he would sit in his stroller, watch movies, play on my phone while I taught. Many of my students watched him grow up! Or, I would pay a nanny to be at my house at 5 AM to get him on the bus for school. These days, he’s a sophomore and it’s a lot of Lyft and Ubers!

However, a few years ago, I happened to be getting ready for a fundraiser and glanced over at what Alex was writing. The first line of his essay was, “My name is Alex Erickson and my favorite activity is the competitive sport of baseball, my treasured possession is a valuable signed baseball and my hero is none other than my hard working mom.” I must be doing something right!

Endurance Pilates and Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Endurance Pilates and Yoga is a boutique fitness studio located in the South End. We are primarily a Pilates studio, but we do offer barre, yoga and boot camp type fitness classes for our students. The type of Pilates that we teach is Classical Authentic Pilates using the Endurance Method. Our Pilates lineage is New York style through Romana Kryzanowska and we teach exclusively on Gratz equipment which is made to Joseph Pilates’ exact specification.

What this means for our students is that they are receiving the highest quality Pilates instruction in the area. Every instructor in the studio has well over 1,000 hours of training, multiple certifications and years of experience teaching movement. Our classes are small and we provide very detailed direction verbally, via tactile cues and general movement education. Most of our business is in private one on one sessions- some of our students come to the studio seven days a week- where we are very much able to change a person’s body over the course of our work.

I am most proud of our dedication to keeping the Classical Pilates tradition alive within the studio and of the dedication of my staff to constantly pursuing further education- as trainers, physical therapists and movement specialists to bring Endurance students the highest quality instruction available.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as the ability to give back, to go above and beyond the scope of my own business. I feel that I am successful in that I can dedicate some part of my business to complimentary sessions for folks that have a need for my expertise.

Success isn’t a number or marker, it is the ability to be so good at what I do that my schedule is packed 14 hours a day with clients paying almost $200 an hour in order that I can dedicate one hour to a person that needs my services and may not have the means to afford private sessions.
