Meet Julia Davis of The Davis Method in Western Mass, Hampshire County and Hadley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Davis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Julia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Davis Method was formed as three practitioners (and family members) recognized the value of a healthy mind and the burden of stress. Our business was formed to help people live the life they intend. Whatever the goals (pain management, stress reduction, strength building, sleep improvement, etc), we utilize Massage, Hypnosis, and Fitness to help our clients reach these goals and live intentionally.

We began in a small, 300 sq. ft. the office that we would convert between clients. As you can imagine, a fitness studio looks quite different than a massage and hypnosis treatment room. But we knew we needed to start small in the beginning. Now, we proudly boast a comfortable waiting room, with two private treatment rooms for Massage and Hypnosis, and a 500 sq. ft. Fitness Center. We continue to grow and add new services and recently began offering Chair Yoga classes for clients with limited mobility.

As a family-run business, our work is very personal. We work seamlessly with one another to develop an optimal and personalized treatment plan. We treat our clients with kindness, compassion, and are constantly in awe of the incredible progress they make. We support local events and fundraisers year-round and are active members of the community in Western Mass. As our business continues to grow, we hope to expand our reach and impact many more lives.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think anyone can prepare you for what it’s like to start a small business. You will work countless hours without making any money, and in fact, spend a lot of your money in the meantime. It is stressful and time-consuming and at times thankless (unless you take the time to reward yourself.) But the true reward is getting to do what you love. This may mean you have to work on Sunday rewriting copy for your website, but at least you get to do it at home in your PJs with a cup of tea and a cat on your lap.

I can, however, say it’s best not to go it alone. Even on the worst day, it’s better to have someone equally invested by your side to strategize with you. Lucky for me, my partners aren’t strangers, they’re family. This means that we already know how one another work and we are fully committed to each other. We know each others’ strengths and weaknesses and delegate work to make the burden feel less. In truth, many hands do make light work.

We each also maintain part-time work in addition to our business hours. Though this has caused challenges, given there are only 24 hours in a day, it has been a great option for us to provide a stable side income.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Davis Method – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Davis Method offers three unique services (Massage, Hypnosis, and Fitness) and utilizes these modalities to provide goal-based wellness. We work with our clients to help identify and execute their goals. These goals can vary greatly from client to client. They are free to work with as many of our team members as they like. We address issues such as sleep quality, chronic pain, postural strain, muscle weakness, anxiety, and muscle tension (just to name a few.) We work with many Single-Sport and Multi-Sport athletes of varying levels who are training for their next race. By preparing both mentally and physically, our athletes find their goals quickly achievable and training enjoyable.

You’ll frequently see us at local events providing massage and consulting with the local community. We love meeting new people and hearing their stories. There are so many incredible people working through their own challenges and this connection with our community reminds us of the importance of our work.

We are undoubtedly most proud of our clients. These people have made a conscious decision to be better. Not that their coworker or their sister or their friends, but better than a past version of themselves they are ready to let go of. They are done being afraid, done being in pain, done a feeling week. They are ready and dedicate to living life intentionally, and that gives us the greatest of joy.

As a business, our passion sets us apart. We are dedicated to our clients and our craft every day because we truly love our work. I was just asked the other day by a client if I love being a Massage Therapist. Without hesitation, I replied, “This is my favorite time of the day.” And I know my two partners feel the exact same way about their work. What drives us every day is the ability to do more of what we love.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love being located in Western Mass. It’s a tight-knit community that values wellness and an active lifestyle. Our clients are caring and incredible local professionals, working parents, and student-athletes. We value them and the trust they have in us. Positive word of mouth and client referrals have grown our business quickly because of this connected community. We love that every weekend there is a different road or trail race raising money for a local food shelter, school system, or research foundation.

There are certainly challenges to being a new small business in Western Mass. As there are a large wellness and active lifestyle interest, there are many companies that offer their own take on wellness. This competition was initially intimidating, but having built relationships with these local practitioners, we value their unique approach and happily refer when they may be better suited to potential clients.
