Meet John Miller of Power Drive Performance in Metro West

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Miller.

John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While playing collegiate baseball, I visited Jerry Weinstein, who at that time was the Cal Poly University pitching coach (now with Colorado Rockies). Jerry reviewed my pitching mechanics in slow motion and through video analysis, advised to increase the use of my stronger lower body by learning to pelvic load and creating hip lead out of knee lift to set weight properly. Within 24 hours, my creativity side was developing the Pitchers Power Drive training aid to teach pelvic load and hip lead through a multi-sensory learning process which I understood well as being dyslexic.

Personally knowing the strength of learning by visual, kinetic feel and auditory feedback, I designed the Pitchers Power Drive to include these important multi-sensory learning ques. The Pitchers Power Drive really helped me become a better pitcher with increased performance and velocity while reducing stress on arm/shoulder which is essential to stay healthy as a pitcher. I then started using PPD in lessons with little league youth and high school pitchers, that I enjoyed training while in college. All the pitchers really improved which at that point, I applied for a US Patent which took three years to obtain. Now in the 11th year of business, the Power Drive Performance training products are used by 27 professional and over 700 colleges.

Power Drive Performance (PPD) now has 10 training products with 25 combined models, four of US Patents and one patent pending. Per collegiate and professional coaches, PPD products are the most respected training aids at the highest level of baseball, softball, and golf. Five products have received the American Baseball Coaches Associations Convention most innovative new product, awarded by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Our Winning Pitchers Academy Inc. and Power Drive Performance Inc. companies share a 10k sq. ft. Learning & Research Center. The staff does over 2,500 lessons a year to increase athletes skills and performance. This creates a great environment for the development of new training methodology and products which are then tested for validation up to a year in hundreds of lessons. We average a new product per year through continuous creativity, research development, testing and taking to market. All products are 100% made in the USA including using US steel, turf, powder coating, brand stickers, mound rubbers, packaging, etc. There are nine small US companies involved in support of building PPD products which proudly carry a 5 yr. warranty.

Each PPD product is supported by an Owners Only web-based training site. These sites are as important as the product itself for the customer learning process. Sites are updated yearly and free of charge to all owners. Having my own production company JJ Miller Productions Inc. has allowed in-house video and photo production for our websites and owners training sites. Having our own high-level video/photo production company increase speed of getting projects done on schedule and launching new products to support/build a brand.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are challenges every year which make things interesting, fun and yes, at times frustrating. Biggest challenge has been with the three companies fast growth with limited staff, it’s created the need for everyone on the team to multi-task. This keeps work fun, interesting, active and challenging. Balancing work with personal life is a consistent part of owning a business. This is same for committed team members that experience the daily successes and challenges of operating a small business. Every team member has important responsibilities every day. Time will always be the challenge when owning three companies. Thus the importance of building a strong empowered team for continued growth.

Power Drive Performance Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Owning three small companies, you specialize in everything to a certain point when initially starting up. Creating ideas, designing products, testing for validation, procurement of production materials, how to take to market, building brand, shipping, hiring right team, business management etc. I am most proud that we have succeeded in being a highly respected company with quality products which are built 100% in the USA. With an estimated 27 million small businesses in the United States, “We are proud to be one of these working with 8 others small businesses that contribute to our US economy and providing jobs.”

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest times/moments are when we receive feedback from athletes, their parents, and coaches on the achievement of personal/team athletic skills and performance goals. Hearing back from athletes playing in Little League, High School, Collegiate or Professional teams who have trained with us and own Power Drive Performance products, is what makes our purpose important. Affecting positively so many lives of all ages makes our entire team proud.
