Meet Jesse Macrae of Newport Boxfit in Newport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Macrae.

Jesse, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I moved to Newport I had recently retired from competitive boxing. I searched around to find somewhere so I could continue the training because, in my opinion, it’s the best workout out there. I couldn’t find anything locally so I thought, why not run my own classes?

4 years ago we started with 2 classes a week in the basement of the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County to now running 13 public classes as well as on average 15 private group classes per week at our studio located at 1 Casino Terrace.

We keep our workouts fresh by constantly changing up our routines while always staying true to the sport of boxing. You never know what you are walking into with each class. We also make our classes fun and interactive so you are not only getting pushed by our trainers, but also by each other. We believe in our product and if you go by the growth over the past 4 years, our clients do as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest it’s been pretty smooth from day 1. Like any small business owners, we had the odd curveball thrown at us but really nothing even worth mentioning. Actually, I can’t even remember anything specific so they can’t have been that bad.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Newport Boxfit story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a boxing gym/fitness gym. Although we do train competitive fighters we are mostly known for our boxing fitness classes. 90% of our clients have never stepped foot in a boxing ring. We are known for having one of the most challenging yet rewarding workouts around.

The thing that sets us apart from most boxing gyms is that you get the benefits of a boxer’s workout without the intimidation that most boxing gyms can give. People can get intimidated by the thought of coming to a boxing gym but once they try our classes we are confident that they will love our workouts….its somewhat of a love/hate relationship.

The thing that makes us most proud is seeing our clients push themselves through those last few rounds to get the results they are looking for. We are results driven and we 100% believe in our product. If you don’t get the results you wanted then we failed our job!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We just recently introduced morning classes to our schedule so we are now focusing on building a morning client base. After that, we will reassess and make our next plan.
