Meet Jared Forman of deadhorse hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Forman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jared. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started as a chemistry student. I loved the idea of being a scientist. However, I quickly realized that my personality is not fit for the patience of someone who can sit and wait for things. I want it right fucking now. What do I want now? Everything!! I have always lived to eat and explore new tastes. Becoming a cook was like giving in to what I was always meant to do. After earning a BS in culinary arts at Johnson and Wales University, I went on to work at some amazing restaurants in NYC, staffed and run by some incredibly talented people.

On my journey, I have tried to take my favorite parts of each person I have encountered and develop my own style and preferences. Moving to Worcester has enabled me to be something new. I have the backdrop of a historic building on Main street to help tell the story of this place. We built this restaurant with our own hands and with very little money. That has become part of the dialogue between every guest who joins us. After that, I am able to sit back and allow all of the wonderful products available to me in central mass, and all of the talented people working behind me, to shine.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We live in the struggle. We take pride in knowing the road is difficult. Making crap for money doesn’t bother me. It is a right of passage. We are fully committed to sacrificing the niceties of life that come with money, for loving what we do every single day at work. Owning a restaurant can be very frustrating. People make things challenging. Everyone has their own perspective, worries, faults, and weaknesses. Our job is to find their strengths and support them and to give them the tools to be in the best position to succeed. Every single day is a mountain. Every day I feel happy and fulfilled. Everything else is bullshit.

Please tell us about deadhorse hill.
deadhorse hill is a seasonal American restaurant located on historic Main Street in Worcester, Ma. I am the executive chef and owner. I specialize in yelling at people and I’m known for eating too many cookies. I am proud that when we work together as a team, we are a fantastic restaurant that can really cook great food out of a very inefficient space. We try harder than anyone around. We might not always succeed and we make loads of mistakes, but we try hard. That’s all I can ever ask from anyone

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have spent money on our build out more wisely. I cringe at the minute details of our restaurant. I wish we could fix all of the issues.
