Meet Heidi Lachapelle and Katie Judkins of Heidi Lachapelle Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Lachapelle and Katie Judkins.

Heidi and Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Everything really started at Bates College back in 2006 when Katie and I met. We were taking a Modern Architecture course together–she really liked my photo study guides and I really liked her notes, so we decided to trade. It’s funny to think about this now and how much it mimics where we are today!

After college, we both went our separate ways and got jobs working for corporate retail brands. We continued to connect over the years, despite our distance, through our shared aesthetic and entrepreneurial spirit. We both knew that starting a business together was inevitable, but we just needed to figure out what that business would be.

After completing several renovations on our own homes and rental properties and being a constant source of interior design advice for friends and family, we realized that the business we needed to start was right under our nose this whole time! Interior design is a shared passion for us and we saw a great deal of opportunity for success in the booming housing market of Southern Maine.

We officially launched Heidi Lachapelle Interiors in May of 2017 and have taken on 18 clients and we continue to grow.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life worth working towards is ever smooth! There are always smooth sections of the road, flanked with bumps and potholes that we inevitably run into.

One of our biggest initial struggles was taking the leap to quit our corporate jobs, stable paychecks and guaranteed health care. Leaving this all behind (especially when you have small children) is a big risk and it was scary. In the end, we knew that our quest for some semblance of work/life balance was well worth it.

As a small business owner, you learn something new every single day. We are constantly assessing, adjusting and pivoting to provide the best possible experience for our clients. It’s a constant struggle, but one that is so incredibly satisfying.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
