Meet Heidi B. Kummer, MD and Nancy C. Donahue of BelleCore in Downtown Crossing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi B. Kummer, MD and Nancy C. Donahue.

Dr. Kummer and Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
BelleCore was founded in 2007 by four Boston doctors, an entrepreneur and a medaled triathlete. As (aging) physicians and athletes, who understand how important it is to take care of your body, we wanted to create a simple massage device that could help maintain mobility, flexibility and performance. We also wanted to make it as widely accessible/affordable as possible. We chose the name BelleCore in the firm belief that core strength and wellness is a huge part of being and feeling beautiful. The patented design was developed in collaboration with M.I.T. & Harvard trained engineers. The first product, HoneyBelle® body buffer, was launched in 2010, followed by the universal travel version, BabyBelle® in 2012.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We were totally green and naive going into it and did not realize how challenging it would be to introduce a fitness and beauty device powerful enough to be used by professionals, but safe enough to be used by anyone at home.

Clarisonic had launched their facial tool line but we were the first to come out with a tool designed for use on the entire body. Although we managed to get into Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and even an exclusive at Harrods in London within the first 6 months of coming to market, it seems we were ahead of our time. It was such a novel do-it-yourself concept, it required explanation and even better, a demonstration which is why we spent a lot on sales support and did many, many expos early on.

As soon as people experienced the effects of the unique combination of oscillation and vibration they were sold. It was an expensive and labor intensive undertaking, but certainly helped create brand awareness. The other major challenge was on the manufacturing end; we ran into all sorts of issues which could have been worse had we not been working with the amazing design and engineering team, Paul and Doug Sabin of Fikst in Woburn.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with BelleCore – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
BelleCore is a small company, self-funded and run pretty much entirely by the two managing partners. We manufacture and sell these award winning body buffers that utilize a unique combination of random orbital oscillation and pulsed vibration to deliver a powerful soft tissue massage. In fact, Thermal imaging has proven our dual action body buffers result in a greater and more persistent increase in blood flow/perfusion of the soft tissues compared to manual massage and other hand operated body tools. In addition to warming up muscles and soft tissues prior to exercise, the powerful vibration also improves joint proprioception (joint responsiveness/movement patterns) and mobility (range of motion). Gentler and more effective at reducing muscle soreness and enhancing muscle recovery than other commonly used devices.

The technology has broad application across several markets, the main ones being beauty, fitness and rehab/wellness. Clearly word has gotten out: while we are currently completely sold out of devices and working on a new production line, our wait list grows daily. We are often complimented on our responsiveness and personal customer service. The feedback and testimonials we receive daily from our customers are incredibly rewarding; they are proof of a winning concept and are what motivates us to keep going.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We just signed a 2-year exclusive distribution agreement and are working on a new generation of devices, including one that will be battery operated.
