Meet Garineh Ashjian of Glamour Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garineh Ashjian.

Garineh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in makeup developed at the age of 16 when I joined the Sayat Nova Dance Company of Boston, an Armenian dance company that travels and performs world-wide! Being exposed to stage- makeup ignited a spark in my heart! I loved transforming myself simply with the stroke of a brush!

As I grew older into my mid-twenties and noticed my skin changing, I really started to indulge myself into the beauty world; learning about different ingredients, testing products, and discovering which ones I loved most.

After studying and working in the field of law for years, I decided that I needed to do something different to express my creative mind. Makeup Artistry instantly called out at me! I created an Instagram page (@GlamourCosmeticsOfficial) and began to display my work on myself and my family. I remember contracting my first wedding, I was so nervous that I kept deferring the bride’s trial to a different date! I finally found the courage to do it- and she was absolutely in love with her look. I quickly learned to trust myself and my skills. To think that was only 3 years ago- and to see how far I have come now truly makes me so proud. My following on Instagram just kept growing and I kept booking more and more weddings!

After working successfully for a year as a self-taught, independent makeup artist, I traveled to Los Angeles in October of 2015 and received my certification under the guidance and direction of world-renowned makeup artist Lilit Caradanian and brought my passion and skills back to Boston! I was more energized and determined than ever!

Glamour Cosmetics has grown to be one of the leading makeup artists in New England in just a few short years. I have expanded my portfolio to working with clients from the largest modeling agencies in Boston and collaborating with many different companies for editorial and commercial shoots. I do my research; I know who’s who in this industry- so when I work a wedding that has the best in the business in hair, photography, videography, etc. It makes me so very proud to stand among these groups of professionals!

I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Glamour Cosmetics!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge I have had in this career is delegating my time. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of a small business that no one sees. I try to put time aside to keep up with various social media accounts, update my website as often as possible, respond to dozens of emails and phone calls a day, create contracts, and schedule my calendar through the next year- but it’s definitely not easy. I also work full time as Criminal/Civil Case Manager in Boston’s federal court and dance with Sayat Nova Dance Company twice a week and travel for performances. Family is a huge part of my life- we are very close knit- so I try to make as much time for my family as I can. Sometimes, I miss important events or gatherings- but they are all so supportive of me and completely understand. I also recently got engaged and have to plan my own wedding while I renovate my new house. But I suppose I shouldn’t complain just yet- I don’t even have children of my own to add to my list yet! [Laughs]

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Glamour Cosmetics started off in the bridal industry and quickly expanded. I think what sets me apart from other makeup artists is my range of style and my love for working with people. I have worked on numerous sets for photo shoots, runway shows, and weddings. Whether you prefer a look that is sophisticated and elegant, bold and vibrant, or avant-garde style- I can deliver! It’s also very imperative in bridal makeup to find a balance between what looks good in person and also what looks good on camera. By working with photographers for editorial shoots, and so many brides on their wedding day- I have really honed in and mastered this balance.

If you read my client testimonials on my website; you will see that so many of brides choose me as their makeup artist on one the most important day of their lives not only because of my work, but because of my bright personality. I can’t help it! I love people! I feel like my clients quickly become my friends!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was definitely a tomboy. I was more of an independent child and loved adventure. I would go fishing with my dad and squeeze the worms in half with my fingers. I would never, ever do that now! Ew! [Laughs] In high school, I was into sports all four years. I was the track captain and also a flyer on my cheerleading squad. I was also more risky than my friends. When I was 15, I cut my hair into a very short bob with highlighted tips. I loved it! All the other girls had long hair, but I didn’t care. Now, at 28, I get my nails done religiously every two weeks now and get my hair colored and balyaged every season – but my personality hasn’t changed a bit. I still love adventure, I’m still loud and I still love to have fun! I love making people laugh!
