Meet Feda Masoud of Moderno Salon and Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Feda Masoud.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was 7 when I began to dream about owning my very own top-notch beauty salon. I knew it would be in my future, I just didn’t know when. Sometime had past now, and I was working as a stylist on Newbury Street. Dedicated to my career, I decided to take courses by people who trained with the Vidal Sassoon program. I just wanted to learn everything my industry had to offer. Till this very day, I still love learning and taking classes to educate myself on the latest trends.

Sometime around 2001-2002 is when I reached out to my sister (who is also my business partner), I was ready to open my own Salon. My sister at the time was doing Real Estate, and began her search. My goal was to bring the chic city style to the suburbs. Fortunately, we found a beautiful location to call home. (When you’ve had 20+ years of experience as I have, the Salon becomes your home 🙂 ).

Hard work, dedication, and the support of family, friends, staff, and clients, is what made my dream come true. I am the proud owner of Moderno Salon & Spa, opened 2003.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any starting business goes through some challenges. It wasn’t until I was about two years in that I finally was able to pay myself my first paycheck. I wish I could say I had a difficult time finding the right staff, but I was very lucky to find the team I still have till this day, my second family. Building a clientele can be a very difficult thing to do.

Definitely requires a lot of patience. Although my staff had some clientele of their own, they still had room to grow. During the time of the recession, we struggled a bit. For clients, getting their hair done was a luxury, but during this time, that luxury became limited. Clients were still getting their hair done, but were spacing their appointments out. As appose to re booking every 4-6 weeks, it was more like 6-8weeks. Sometimes 10-12 weeks.

Please tell us about Moderno Salon & Spa.
We offer a wide variety of services, ranging from, cuts, color, make up, facials, waxing, and tanning. I would say I’m known for my corrective colors, and I absolutely love doing color, as well as cuts, styling and updos.

As a company, I’m very proud of my team. The level of commitment and work done by my employees is just phenomenal.

I absolutely love my career, so much, that I am able to connect with my clients in a very special way.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In the beginning, I made quite a few mistakes. I definitely would not have rushed into a few of the investments I made early on in the business. Sometimes as a business owner, you get excited about a certain investment, and it just doesn’t turn out the way one would like for it to.
