Today we’d like to introduce you to Eunice Charles.
Eunice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The idea of Natralee came from a major life event. I was going through what I, at that time, had deemed a quarter-life crisis. I lived 500 miles away from my family and support system. I felt isolated, unhappy, and dissatisfied. These feelings led to anxiety and stress that ultimately manifested as a health problem. My body had to literally cry out to demand that I take better care of me.
After that episode, I made a decision to be intentional with my life choices: what I did, what I ate, what I put on my body. In being mindful, I realized that many of the personal care products I used daily contained chemicals with known links to health problems.
So, I took matters into my own hands. I did some research and started making my own moisturizers and creams. There is such peace of mind in knowing exactly what one is putting on their skin. This is where my motivation lies: making skin care products that nourish and rejuvenate the skin but won’t harm us or the environment.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Even with the hiccups and challenges that have come along the way, starting a business has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience. One of my earlier challenges was figuring out, how to gain the skills needed to run a handmade operation.
I do not have a business background so the past couple of years have basically been an intensive real-world learning experience with me relying on books, the web, and tapping into my amazing network to get a crash course on a host of subjects from sales and marketing to manufacturing regulations and finance.
Also, juggling life, a full-time job, and volunteer work–all while building this company–has made prioritizing tasks a challenge. Everything that I’m a part of is important to me so figuring out what thing needs the most immediate attention at any given time can be a bit tricky. I don’t want to drop the ball on anything but also can’t overextend myself. I’m still figuring out the perfect formula.
For now, I recognize it’s a challenge so I’m more mindful of what I give my attention to and for how long.
Please tell us about Natralee.
Natralee is a natural and eco-friendly skin care company. There are millions of tons of pollutants emitted into the air annually. Pollution falls and lands on our skin; it can degrade collagen, increase inflammatory skin diseases and promotes skin aging.
At Natralee we use sustainably sourced organic and fair trade ingredients to make products that nourish and hydrate the skin. We care about reducing our carbon footprint in every part of the operation so each batch is handmade using solar power.
Our packaging is also recyclable and reusable. Customers often share stories of how they reuse their jars to hold trinkets, small office supplies and more. Our local customers are also encouraged to recycle their jars with us and get a percentage off their next purchase. I want to make it easier for people to both: care for their skin and support companies that are positively impacting our world.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Every setback, stumble, and fall I’ve had along the way has contributed to who I am today. I’m learning to embrace my journey (hiccups and all) so right now, there isn’t anything I would do differently.
