Meet Eric Delin of Delin Design in Pawtucket

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Delin.

Eric, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Delin Design is a uniquely focused firm: we bring together smart, talented individuals to create the perfect blending of experiences, creativity, energy and vision. We want what’s right for clients, and we have fun getting there. Since 1996, we’ve achieved especially outstanding results for our technology, healthcare and retail clientele. Our firm has broad experience in marketing and design, and has worked extensively in advertising and brand development throughout New England as well as the East and West Coasts.

After working for several firms for half a decade after graduating from Boston University, I elected to start my own design studio right at the height of the technology boom. It was a great time to be starting a business, because there was a need for a tremendous amount of identity brand development and expression due to the high degree of start-ups that were taking place. Living on what would be considered the Silicon Valley of the east on the “95 ring” almost weekly, new tech start-up rented space and required marketing with ferocity. Identity work translated to web design and development and we became recognized for our good work.

We took a foothold in that vertical, becoming known by some venture capital firms who listed us on their portfolio preferred vendors which helped broadened our base.

After two or three initial hires, the firm begin diversify beyond their technology clientele — offering other services such as exhibit graphics for shows, packaging, advertising and social media campaigns.

While our roots began as a well-known identity firm that expressed its customer’s brand, we have transformed ourselves into a digital agency to keep pace with client needs and diversified marketing requirements.

Growing to now eight people we are known as a boutique firm that offers VIP services to a broad range markets and can offer a variety of services providing turnkey solutions – something clients have come to expect.

We try to position ourselves as a firm that offers creative strategic marketing services not graphic design. To do that, you must know your client first – a philosophy we hold in high-esteem.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The technology bust of 2001 was both a curse AND a blessing. With many of our clients in that market, it forced us to rethink our strategy and reach out to new markets. It also gave us a chance to concentrate on our own marketing, which is something that is often forgotten, or low on most firms priority list. You simply have to make the time to promote yourself. No one can do that for you. And, it keeps your firm in front of client’s mind on a regular basis.

Delin Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We became known for technology brand expression, but I think many firms can boast that too. The key is to Know Your Client.

But what does “Knowing Your Client” mean?

It requires us to learn who the customer is, truly understand their products and culture, and then provide solutions that best reflect both. It means that when we provide a client with creative solutions to any marketing requests, they are congruent with target audiences’ expectations, not just the internal marketing teams. It allows for us to challenge the conventional creative solutions by always, always providing a client with what they expect AND what they truly may need. We never believe that we can show one independent of the other, as we have determined it is necessary for a client to understand that we know them, have heard them, and can provide them a competent solution before going outside the “comfort zone,” pushing the envelope a bit further. That’s critical to your new brand platform success. It is what clients desires, and what they truly require, and exactly what we offer.

It’s a simple philosophy, but not often put into practice. But when it is, it can apply to any vertical or service we offer.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When our studio is as happy with the creative solution that we have provided our client, and that client gains visibility, traction and revenue linked to our efforts – it is deemed the biggest success.

Attracting followers is also held in equal value. We are extremely active on social media, and plan our internal posts a month in advance. It speaks to the culture of the studio, and it probably one of the most enjoyable aspects we collaborate on.
