Meet Angelica Kanuha of Elemental Essence in Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Kanuha.

Angelica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Elemental Essence was an idea turned reality in 2010. I decided that there was no motivation for me in working the uninspiring daily grind. I believed that the world had a gift with my name on it. Having a passion for the wonders nature had to offer, I set my sights to pursue my desire of Herbal Medicine.

My journey took off with The Boston School of Herbal Studies where I participated in a hands-on Certified Intensive Herbal Apprenticeship program. Intrigued by my new found knowledge, I enrolled in Linda Patterson’s Aromatherapy program. Taking these first steps, jump-started a new way of thinking which changed my whole life. I started to partake in various, in-depth herbal study courses in Eastern (Chinese), Ayurvedic and Western Medicine and Aromatherapy while engaging in hands-on case studies.

Armed with knowledge, my everyday practices in my life changed. A conscious lifestyle was now underway. Reading labels became second nature, not only with food but now my skincare and cosmetics. I started noticing the nasty ingredients hidden under all those fancy wraps. Feelings cheated, I decided that I wasn’t going to settle for just anything I put IN my body or ON my body. My vision was to educate others and also be able to cater to specific wellness conditions.

The Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics was my next stop to obtain my Massachusetts Esthetic License. Completing the Masters Esthetics program, the highest level of education offered in the United States. This introduced me to all levels of beauty. Having a broad understanding of herbal medicine and now scientific skin care, Elemental Essence was put into motion.

Elemental Essence is a wellness and beauty company that I established in 2010 when my vision first came to mind. Since then, I have diligently worked on expanding product formulations and ideas. I focus on creating organic skincare, cosmetics, and aromatherapy applications as well as herbal formulations for wellness purposes. I have taken up the art of Henna body adornment and offer this service for events and individuals. Taking the brand on the road, I love to educate others and do demos on Elemental Essence products and philosophies. I am also a host on Revolution Awakening Radio/Podcast that airs on iTunes and WEMF Radio, a Boston based internet radio station that broadcasts globally bringing you topics on mind body and soul as well as issues that shape society.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an entrepreneur is never easy. There is still ups and down, just like with everyday life. Some struggles of mine were breaking into the beauty industry. With so many different brands popping up claiming to have conscious ingredients, standing out was always a challenge. In order to combat this, I made sure my brand had a deep passion behind it and a face to match. Creating these products by hand and not outsourcing production is dear to me and my customers as well as interacting with them on a personal level. This ensures great communication and retention of supporters.

Another hardship I have experienced while on this journey is finding where I fit in. Not just as a business but as an individual. The herbal community in Boston was and still is, a tight-knit bunch of like-minded people. Coming on the scene as a city oriented yet nature inspired young women, curious to their ways, I was accepted lovingly to most yet received a few side eyes. Change to the beauty world, where women’s appearances are number one and herbal medicine is rarely thought of, it was interesting to make my own path that combined the two.

Never give up.
