Meet Dumas Lafontant, Jonathan Regis and Edna Chery of Z Gallery in Roxbury

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dumas Lafontant, Jonathan Regis, and Edna Chery.

Dumas, Jonathan, and Edna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I believe the art brings meaning to my life by reconnecting me to an original objective. As a school-age child, I designed a postcard for special occasions and holidays. This was my way of giving thanks to the noble people who played a leading role in my life. Brief, the art is my best practice to bringing people together. Indeed, the moment that I decided to make a wider impact in Roxbury, MA, I decided to launch a multi-purpose art organization, called Z Gallery. Access to Art facilities is undoubtedly the most difficult challenge that local artists, designers, and entrepreneurs face. I consider Z Gallery a piece of the puzzle to solving this problem. In addition, Z Gallery allows me to connect local artists to the stuff of wealth, such as financial de-risk so that they can make a living from their craft.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would like to launch a Co-op Housing project to offer live and work-space to eligible local artists and entrepreneurs. This project is intended to mitigate the impact of gentrification among local residents of Roxbury, MA. Often, artists are used to generating interest in urban renewal, however, they rarely are able to afford to stay once a neighborhood is revitalized. So I have sought to address this issue by introducing art strategy in neighborhood revitalization.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Z Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
Zizi Gallery (Z Gallery), an Entrepreneur Collaboration founded in Boston, Massachusetts; 2012, is conceived to support artists as a small- and medium-enterprise. Z Gallery is comprised of a team of artists who see themselves as a business for the specific purpose of making a living from art. With a particular focus on Innovation and Technology, Z Gallery creates culture anew to decide policy. Its comprehensive business model allows for variety in service delivery, organizational structure, and clientele. The heart of Z Gallery is its designed business incubator.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am lucking that I was born into a good family. The youngest of eight children, since the age of ten, I have been in service to disenfranchised children and families. As a business facilitator, I have made the elimination of poverty among children and families my life’s mission. Along the way, I have been fortunate to meet many others who share this world vision of Better Urban Future.
