Meet Dr. Karen S. Clickner of Conscious Body Natural Medicine in Brookline & Holden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Karen S. Clickner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had laid out my future through college and then fate intervened when I gave up graduate school in international law and moved to Europe on a whim. Shortly after that I was diagnosed with a serious illness and chose to stay in Europe and treat it naturally.

This was the beginning of my realization that our health care system was flawed and has continued to progress in a negative direction in the true care of the entire being. I studied Myofascial Release therapy, medical Herbalism and then Naturopathic Medicine beginning private practice in 1986. I provided health information through my radio program on World Radio Geneva as The Herbal Advisor which later became my online magazine forum. I established ISIS Holistic Clinic in Brookline in 1997 continuing the work of the oldest holistic clinic in Boston since 1944. Later as my work became more and more focused on immune disorders and working with chronic unresolved illness, I established Conscious Body Natural Medicine which provided more personalized natural medicine for patients that felt they had little chance of ever feeling healthy again. It has been my greatest delight to hear patients tell me that they feel they have their life back. I always wanted to be a perpetual student, and I feel I am with seminars, research and recent published works that are illuminating the mysteries of the human body for me every day. Now I love my work and the extraordinary blessing it is to work with the human body and the human emotional life in a natural and positive way. I look forward to the next 30 years of practice with even more enthusiasm than I had for the first 30.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth journey. Our medical and health care system are formulated in a way that makes medical choices obsolete. Each patient is provided with a diagnosis and accepted solutions that are limited to surgery or pharmaceutical drugs.

Prescriptions are provided indefinitely with the concern for liability outweighing the concern for a patient’s best interests. Because of the extreme difference in philosophy between conventional medicine and natural medicine, many conventional physicians have continued to denounce natural medicine and do their best to dissuade patients from seeking a natural opinion regarding their condition, even when conventional medicine has nothing to offer.

Many patients come to me having been shunned by their physician for avoiding a surgical option, or for wanting to get off a pharmaceutical drug, or being fearful of vaccinating their child. Physicians are given increasingly shorter and shorter periods of time to evaluate and advise a patient, often leaving so many questions unanswered in the patient’s mind. Even the “funds” created to find solutions for illness, whether Lupus, Breast Cancer or Autism, fail to provide any of these funds for natural medicinal options, instead funneling them solely into conventional medicine for more drug development.

All of this has conspired to be a continual uphill battle in helping people of all income brackets to come to natural medicine. Without the benefit of funding, it is a challenge to provide the personalized care and education essential to the Naturopathic path. Even recent licensing in Massachusetts of Naturopaths has linked the profession to the insurance industry by insisting that Naturopaths accept insurance, while insurance companies push Naturopaths to spend less time with patients and accept a significantly smaller fee, while directing them as to what they can provide in working with patients.

I spend 50% of my time educating patients and 50% of my time defending what I do. That’s 50% more time I could be devoting to patients if only natural medicine would be accepted fully and live a life alongside conventional medicine.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Conscious Body Natural Medicine story. Tell us more about the business.
The sheer volume of patients that I have treated over my 30 years has provided a better clinical research model than any clinical study can. It provides a wealth of experience that really sets me apart from most other Naturopathic practitioners. I specialize in Women’s Breast Health, Immune Disorders and mysteries. So many patients come with a myriad of symptoms that other practitioners either cannot figure out or dismiss as simply an emotional stress. I treat elderly people who are told their symptoms are normal for their age, when in fact, that is the furthest from the truth. Women are led to believe that nothing can be done to prevent breast cancer, that they must simply wait for the results of their next mammogram in order to know how healthy their breast tissue is. Again, I have incorporated methods into my clinics which defy this concept and give women incredible ranges of options for ensuring breast health.

The referrals from my patients is my best testimonial. It has brought over 10,000 patients to my door and gives me a great opportunity to provide face to face education one patient at a time. The information available through my practice acts as a guide to those searching for answers. I have developed the Immunity Reimagined Profile system for assessing immune conditions and the Breast Health Sisterhood Program to support women year-round with the very best natural medicine has to offer.

Patients of Conscious Body Natural Medicine consistently say that they learned more in one hour with us than in all the time they have spent with their doctor over the years. Because the more informed a patient is about their body, the more informed the decisions are that they make concerning that body.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a firm believer in the power of intentions. By maintaining a personal balance in my own life, I have found it to reflect in my business. If my personal life is full of chaos or personal strife, then my business reflects that as well. It’s the old saying “when it rains, it pours”.

Creation begins with an idea that then stimulates creative actions, that serve to bring that idea into the world. This is the power of the positive which is essential for a business to flourish. It isn’t about how much money you make, or how much influence you have, it is about how many people’s lives are nourished and improved through the existence of your business.

For this reason, our prices are not for us to become rich, they are as low as possible to allow more people access to natural medicine and its solutions. The more positive experiences we can initiate, the more nourishing the business is for everyone.
