Meet Christine Lam Kong of Wild Souls Studio in Lowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Lam Kong.

Christine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was always a pretty creative person growing up but never even considered pursuing photography until my husband, Van planted the seed in my brain just shy of my 25th birthday. From that “aha moment”, I drowned myself in everything photography, taught myself (and later, Van) how to use the camera and started documenting our life and travels in a way I wanted to remember our moments together.

Very early on, I learned that love was my jam. I’m a huge sucker for romance and being able to translate a couples love language into stills just connected with me so much more than anything else. That realization led Van and I to join forces as a duo and Wild Souls was born in 2015.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Aside from the normal challenges of starting a business in a very saturated industry, my style of photography took a bit of time to warm up to potential clients. My work leans heavily toward a moodier and documentary approach, which isn’t typically the first thing that comes to mind when couples think of wedding photography. The thought of changing my style to captivate any kind of audience was of course something that crossed my mind many times but I didn’t want to have to change my vision for more business. Staying true to my art was way more important to me and it has been worth it. I am so in love and appreciative of each of our couples because they allow the visions to happen no matter how odd a request may be. You guys rock!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wild Souls Studio – what should we know?
Wild Souls is a husband and wife run wedding photography biz! I’ve also recently starting dipping my feet into intimate women’s portraiture which is an exciting new adventure. We’re based just north of Boston and travel to meet lovers nationwide! We specialize in artful storytelling drawn to the in-between moments. We love working with free-spirited couples who wear their heart on their sleeve and value real honest imagery — no matter how messy and wild it is. Because that’s what a real relationship is. It’s made up of these perfectly imperfect but so weirdly magically shared moments between two people.

Many people comment on how comfortable and “modelesque” the people in our pictures look and the truth is 90% of our clients are not at all comfortable being in front of the camera. A lot of laughing and goofing around happens and we’ve become good friends with a lot of our couples! I definitely think that in itself is a testament to our connection with the people we photograph which is super important to us and our work. Even if their wedding day is the first time all of us meet — we always leave as friends by the end of the night. Big hugs are involved too.

As a woman who grew up reading Glamour magazines, seeing one of our weddings featured on Glamour is up there in my proudest moments for Wild Souls!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty is something I value. Whether it be in my work, with our clients, relationships or anything that calls for it. So, staying true to myself and being transparent are two things that have been the key to all of this.
