Meet Christina Zichelle of Xtend Barre Burlington in Burlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Zichelle.

Christina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I was living in Hoboken, NJ right after college. I was working my corporate job at Procter and Gamble, putting to good use my double major of marketing and management to work. I was working from home and needed to find a healthy habit to give me a mid-day boost and increase my productivity. Not having had much of a fitness background, I had a hard time finding something I truly enjoyed. That is until I found barre. Not only did barre put me in the best physical shape of my life, mentally, I was clear. I had the energy to get me through the day and I could fit back into my skinny jeans from college.

One snowy cold day, I suffered a fall and broke my ankle. All of a sudden, my barre craze had to come to a sudden stop and surgery was in order. It took months to recover and in the midst, I was relocating for work to Boston. Being in a new city, with a new job, I knew that finding the perfect barre studio would get me back into a routine even though I was nowhere near 100% recovered. I had just retaught myself how to walk again and knowing that the foundation of barre catered to all levels, I knew I could do it.

I had a hard time finding a studio in Boston that had the same type of style and sense of community that I was had. Having the entrepreneurial spirit, a plateau at work and drive to do more, I set out to find the best barre franchise there was to Boston. I searched far and wide for the best international barre studio and then I found Xtend Barre. It was one conversation with the founder and I knew I had to be part of this movement. Little did I know, there were plans in place to open one on Newbury street with another franchise who had just as much passion and drive as I did. My plans shifted and I had to rethink where to open the second location in Massachusetts.

I came across an opportunity in Burlington, a dynamic suburb, 13 miles NW of Boston. The area was booming – retail, company relocations, vibrant neighboring communities. From there, the rest of history. Long story short, I was a girl with a dream to make a difference in something I was truly passionate about; bringing together a diverse group and empowering them to be their very best selves.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I often tell my family and friends, “I should have blogged this,” “when am I writing my book?” “I am naming it ‘Oh my Gosh'” No, it has not been easy. They do not teach you how to be a business owner in college or throughout your first job. It takes a vision, persistence, consistency, drive, and support to get you through each day. Just like we say in Xtend Barre that “no two classes are the same”, the same goes for my days. How have I managed thus far? Expect the unexpected, love your team like they are family and embrace the community.

I believe branding continues to still be my biggest opportunity, getting our message and studio mission out to the community in a way that sets us apart from the competition. With the boutique industry being as saturated as it is, it is challenging. There are a lot of great options out there, there are also a lot of people out there, we can all win and be successful in our own ways.

Please tell us about Xtend Barre Burlington.
Xtend Barre is the largest international barre franchise. What sets us apart is our 4 pillars; community, movement, transformation, and growth. I am most proud to say we have a big “XTEND FAMILY” (as we call it) at the studio. All walks of life walk through the studio and friendships are made, personal goals are met and memories are created. It is truly special and I am proud of each and every client who walks through the door. Working out can be intimidating and with all the pressure through social media, many decide it’s easier not to go. I have been there, we have all been there. I am happy that we embrace people to make them stronger, no matter what it takes.

Now, lets get into the workout:
Our signature barre class is different than other barre formats. We incorporate larger movements in addition to the small movements (pulsing as you probably know it) you see in other barre classes. Power, strength, cardio is our motto and we deliver results. Our instructors are thoroughly trained with choreography but no two classes are ever the same. We do not work off scripts. Each class has a personality and our clients notice that.

In addition to our barre classes, we offer other formats. Xtend Suspend (TRX), Xtend Stick, Circuit 7 (HIIT) and Fitball (stability training). One membership, 5 class options.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I live with the idea of no regrets because each decision leads me to where I am today. With that said, I have learned a great deal from my failures. I think which each failure, you grow stronger and achieve a new milestone. If I had to say one thing, I wish I had listened to my dad who told me “this isn’t going to be easy” so mentally, I was more prepared.
