Meet Christa Terry of Hello Mamas in Beverly and Hull

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christa Terry.

Christa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Once upon a time each of the founders of Hello Mamas found herself feeling isolated and overwhelmed by this gig called motherhood. Christa Terry was a first-time preemie mama who didn’t know anything about premature birth or any mothers of preemies, and so giving birth to her early bird in the middle of a rough New England winter was kind of a shock. Meg Gerritson’s first baby turned out to have severe food allergies and both developmental and physical delays and didn’t know any other moms in her neighborhood.

We created Hello Mamas because we didn’t want other moms to have that same isolating first-time mom experience. We built an easy way for mothers to connect with their local communities and with other likeminded moms nearby and quickly gained a foothold in the Boston area thanks to a few small marketing initiatives. But we were happily surprised to see moms from across the US signing up – even though we hadn’t officially launched outside of Massachusetts!

Since then we’ve continued to be happily surprised at how moms continually find us and then connect with their local communities via the app and our web service.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding developers who really understood and believed in our mission has been rough. A lot of the people we’ve tried working with have seen Hello Mamas as some side project that a couple of stay at home moms were playing around within their off hours – not realizing that both Christa and Meg have strong backgrounds in business, marketing, and tech and are 100% dedicated to making Hello Mamas amazing!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hello Mamas – what should we know?
Hello, Mamas helps mamas at every stage of the motherhood journey meet local mothers for friendship and support, find playmates and playdates for kids, and get answers to the most common questions mothers have. Once upon a time, people would describe us as the for moms but that sounds way too older fashioned. The app and web service are a true social networking product.

Now at this point, there are plenty of mom friend matches out there but what sets Hello Mamas apart is that we created a sophisticated matching algorithm that helps mothers find local mamas with similar interests, schedules, families, challenges, and personalities. You can curate your experience to be as open or as choosy as you like!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We’ve received mentorship and business advice from Meg’s husband (founder of Agency 451) as well as from my mom (an executive specializing in big data and analytics), but most helpful has been the hundreds of moms who have made suggestions as we’ve grown into the company we are now.
