Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlene Hatfield-Nutter.
Charlene, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my Esthetic career graduation from Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics in 1993. I worked as an Esthetician for years and then came upon lash extensions in 2003. I had been hearing about them so went to Boston to take a certification class. My clients loved them and my lash career began. A year later, Novalash got in touch with me to see if I wanted to be the NH educator for them. I flew to San Fransisco, was trained by a Dr. there and began to teach Novalash certification classes. I continued to take certification class in volume through Skyn Lash Academy in New Jersey and Flawless Lashes in London. Over the years, my lash clientele grew, so I stopped offering esthetic serviced and only did lash extensions renting space in salons. I opened my own location in Londonderry, NH a little over a year ago and my daughter, Ashley who I’ve trained also works there offering lash extensions. I also became Novalash trainer for the states of MA, VT, & ME, so was the Novalash educator for most of New England. I moved to Rockland, Maine in 2016, as I had met an amazing lobster fisherman and fell in love.
After moving there, I searched in the area and opened up my second location in Camden, ME. I also began taking classes this July for my prerequisites to get my registered nursing license so I had to give up offering certification classes for Novalash as of the end of 2018. I also am a journalist for Lash Inc., the largest lash extensions magazine for the US & Canada. In 2015, I had heard of microblading and after investigating, I decided to take a class in New York from David Brow Art but this only introduced me to the craft. One year later, I traveled to DC and took another advanced 6-day class from WorldMicroblading which started my business offering microblading services. I love what I do as I frame my clients faces with microblading brows (which look like fine hairs) and enhancing their eyes through lash extensions. When I receive my nursing license, I will offer medical services such as botox, fillers, etc. as well as continue school, so I can teach nursing at the colleges.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were definitely struggles as lash extensions became popular there were many people who weren’t taking certification classes and just watching YouTube videos to learn lash extensions. They then started offering them at very low prices and were damaging people’s natural lashes so this started giving lash extensions some negativity. Opening my own locations also had some struggles with finding the right location, cost of setting up and advertising. I found though because of the years I have been a lash extension stylist, being an educator for Novalash and posting my work on social media has been a big help in bringing clients to my business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with EyeEnvy Lash & Brow Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My business, EyeEnvy Lash & Brow Studio has two locations, Londonderry, NH & Camden, ME. I specialize in lash extensions, classes to volume, varying in colors and styles to suit each individual client. I also offer microblading of the brow which imitates tiny little hairs and looks like the actual brow. I feel I have built a reputation for my work but also my education which I continue on a yearly/bi-yearly basis. I’m very proud of my honesty and concern for my clients and keeping my prices affordable so clients can get the lash extensions or microblading. I also use only top products so my clients don’t even feel the lash extensions and/or are amazed at how real their brows look. What sets me apart from others is I put the time and money into my clients and business and offer them the best product as they’re walking around with my work, so I want them and others to know of the work I do and offer is of the best quality.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is such a great city with so much history. I have brought my two children there many times to the museums, Fenway Park, Fanual hall. There’s so much diversity there and so much economic growth it’s a great city to visit often as you can go from seeing a musical to a concert to a marathon. I love Boston and can’t think of anything I don’t like about the city.
